Question for Diabetics

I was just wondering how many of you had/have diabetes and if the surgery helped you. I am very disappointed today. Yesterday was my first day of pureed foods and today my BS is up again. It's been normal for almost a week. Does it take a while for the BS to normalize? Does this mean mine isn't going to? More than half the reason I had this surgery was to help with the diabetes and I'm so upset today.

I did not have full-blown diabetes but I was borderline and was struggling to make changes to help myself.  So I can't fully answer but I can say that it takes time.  I was no longer pre-diabetic by the time I was about 4 mos. out.  The body is struggling to heal up until at least 3 months so up and down of everything is really (normally) expected.  Just keep a log and watch your BS number and track it.  I have no doubt that you will see an improvement after some time and FEEL so much better about that and just overall.  Hang in there, the journey continues.

I am a diabetic.  Before the surgery I had to take medication to control my diabetes, and even then I had many out of control days.  Today, two years later, my diabetes is completely diet controlled.  My blood sugars are always normal.  As I recall, it did take a while (maybe months) before I was able to give up my diabetes meds completely (as well as medication for hypertension and high cholesterol.)  I believe the number is 80% of people with the surgery have diet-controlled diabetes.  100% have improvement of their diabetes.

Hi,
Have not had my sugery yet,can only tell you what my pcp said.  That they probably take me off my meds as I would not be eating that much in the beginning.  Don't be upset or discouraged, you have taken the steps you need to improve your health.  You didn't get this way in a short period  of time.  Give it some time, you are not that far out yet.  Sit back and enjoy the ride, it may seem bumpy now but it will improve.
Hugs and Good wishes your way. Ena

Ena, Check your sugars frequently pre op because I was never able to go off my meds even on the liquid fast. I actually had to stop the Slim Fast ans switch to Carnation Instant Breakfast because it was spiking my sugars so badly.

Everyone else -- thanks. I guess I just want miracles. I have to remember as my PCP says, This is a marathon, not a sprint!!!!

I use to to diabetes medications 2x a day.  Stopped taking them the day before surgery and havent taken anything since.  My sugars run 80 - 90 and my 3 month test was a 5.

I did not take my sugar count every day in the beginning.  I took it 2x a week.
I now check once a week just because I have test strips left and to see if I am on track.

I still have lab work done every 3 months and the Dr is very pleased.  I do follow the rules and eat protein first, then a vegetable and then  carbs.

Good luck.

when I went in I was a type two and when I was discharged it was in remission I went from 13 pills down to 4 whoppeee!  It may take a little bit of time for you but I would ask my surgeon that question also.

My A1C's pre-surgery were in the 8's, my 6 month labs, 5.7---- woo hoo.  Off meds since surgery -- 10 pills a day.  I do have to say my morning blood sugar isn't always way low ---- 120-150 range, but once I move, eat my protein it settles to a nice level.

104 lbs lost now Maintenance BABY!!!!

Don't be upsset.I have had diabetes for 22 years on oral meds only. I had gastric bypass for my diabetes cause everyone says its a cure well it is not for everyone, pre-op I was on actos, metformin 1000mg 2x daily and glyburide 10 mg 2x daily.
post-op my BS were in the 90's and then when I advanced my diet it started to creep up again when it got to 200 FBS I had to go back on medication started takingJanuvia becaue it only works when your BS is high it won' t give you a low like the sulfonureas(glyburide). you don't get that low BS feeling when you don't eat  on time. Drs. can tell you what to do and how to treat  your diabetes but unless they are diabetic they only know from books not from feeling and low BS to me is the worse feeling in the world
When my BS started to go up I was hysterical taking my BS like 7 to 10 times a day, the Dr. said I was making myself crazy but I expected this surgery to make my  BS normal all the time, it does for some people & it doesn't work for others. I thought after my tummy tuck it would get better cause I lost all my belly fat, I have no belly fat at all but it didn't get any better in fact the stress of surgery made it go up to like 150 in the a.m.. Surgery stresses my body my BS will take ablut 4 months to go back to normal which for me is between 100 & 120.
I am not upset anymore re: my BS because it is a lot better then before ny A1C is 6.7 compared to 10.9, and because I have the BS issue I have never tested the waters I have not had anything more then 2g sugar and I watch my carbs so my BS doesn't go up. so for me I guess it is better so I really watch myself. I hope I can stay strong and never have sugar cause if I can tolerate sugar without dumping, I will be right back where I started from and I never want to go back there, this is the best I have felt in 25 years.
Good Luck to you I hope it all works out
