Food v/s Fluids
Right now I am having a hard time eating food. Yesterday it took me 2 hours to get in my lunch. Since the food has been so hard these last few weeks I have found it hard to get in my required fluids. After I eat I am so miserable that I don't want to drink. My protein shakes have been going great for me, is it ok to drink 2 protein shakes a day and maybe mix in some cheese and yogurt instead of trying to get in meat protein? I think it may be all the stress I am under, but any real solid food is painful for me to eat right now. So is it ok to do the protein shakes in lieu of meat right now?
Thanks!
Thanks!
You are quite a ways out to be having this much trouble with food - didn't I see late 2008 by your name??? I would first call the surgeon. Protein shakes are fine 2x a day if you are having problems. Make sure that you are getting 64 ounces of fluid though - if you get dehydrated you're going to be even sicker and could need IV fluids.
Hope you are feeling better soon!!
Oh and after the first few months I know my surgeon prefers that we get our protein in from food sources rather then shakes - but shakes are fine here and there.

My hubby had his surgery Jan 2006. AFter surgery he had a lot of problems with Strictures needing endoscope and the use of a balloon to open his stoma to allow the food and fluids to exit the pouch.
He is currently having the same problems. 3 years later. He is scheduled for an endoscope on July 7th to find out what is going on in there.
You might want to let your doctors know what is going on. I had to coax the hubby to finally see the doc, all in good time for him. He didn't want to go because he said he felt like he was complaining to much. My theory was if you can't eat there must be something going on in there, it's better to complain than to be sorry later. Took him a few weeks to take my advice, but he has and the test is scheduled, I'm very curious to find out what the results end up being.
We spoke with the nurse prac at the surgeons office where he had his WLS, she said it is possible it's a stricture again even this far out....so it will be interesting to see what's going on in there.
Take care,
Ida

Temporarily to do shakes to keep protein and fluids up is ok...but I'm in agreeance with everyone else...being 5 or 6 mos out the food issues should have resolved a bit by now...perhaps an ulcer or something? Definately call the doc in the meantime.
Feel better!

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.
