may cancel surgery...also posted in my blog
thank you. I've been back and forth over these past few months with many fears as some of you know and then just plain old doubt as many don't know. the health problems I have are a main reason though that I've been doing all of this (surgery). I still don't know if doing this on my own will be enough to help them, but I'm going to try.
You are the only person who can determine which course of action is right for you. If you feel you can lose the weight by working with a personal trainer and following a nutrition plan then by all means do that - if you find that its not working you can always opt for the surgery at a later date, but if you're having serious doubts right now then you should postpone the surgery until you are 100% certain you can live with it and the guidelines you have to follow in order to make it work.
You can absolutely keep coming here - we don't discriminate as long as you don't discriminate against people who have chosen WLS as their option to lose weight and become healthier. After 30 years of dieting and exercising and realizing that I could not take it all off and keep it off WLS was the best option for me - I have never lost this much weight in my life and I feel wonderful and I work my tool every day - not always to its best advantage but I do try.
You're not crazy - you just have to know what is right for you. During my insurance requirements I lost 33 lbs by joining a fitness center and just tracking what I ate without going on a strict diet - much like you described. On my pre-surgery 10 day liquid diet I lost another 17 bringing my pre-surgery weight loss to 50 lbs. My surgeon even asked me why I needed him the day of surgery since I had lost so much - I told him I needed him to help me lose the next 100-150, because I knew that even with the 50 gone I couldn't do it on my own.
Wish you all the best...Kathy

aww...I really do like the PA board here and everyone is so supportive. I would like to stay and there's no way I'd discriminate against anyone. the only reason I'm thinking about chosing a nonsurgical weight loss plan is because I don't feel I'm ready. not because I think badly of it, or because I feel badly about the people who have had it. I wouldn't have come this far in the wls journey if I did.
I'm just taking it one day at a time. I just don't think I'm going to be ready in the next week or so for them to give me a date. even if I were to think wls is the right option I'm going to wait since I do have these doubts now. just need to get everything straight in my head. if I'm doing surgery I want to do it at 110%.

Sounds to me that you know exactly where your head is right now - and its telling you you're not ready and there is nothing wrong with that - we support your decision either way. This is a huge commitment and if you're not 100% behind it then you're making the best decision you can, and that is to not do it right now. Trust me, I wish I could have taken the weight off without surgically altering my body - I fought it for years - but one day I cam to the realization that for me this was my best, only option to save my life. But that was me, not you - you have to do what is best for you, and I applaud you for knowing that you're not ready and for not committing when you're not sure. I know for me it was a very emotional decision because I had always said I would never resort to weight loss surgery - never say never, huh!
This is an 'Obesity Help' board for PA people, not just a surgical weight loss board, and if we can help you on your journey with support and encouragement thru diet and exercise we certainly will - this is a fantastic bunch of people out here and we don't judge - at least I don't think we do - LOL!!

If you're not ready, you're not ready for the surgery... that's it! Trust yourself in that.
But also understand that if you've been through the routine of loss-gain-loss-gain before (as most of us on here have), in order to succeed this time, you'll need to make sure you address WHY you go off the wagon , no matter which option you choose. As many have said, the surgery affects your tummy, not your head... and in most cases (myself DEFINITELY included), the reason I failed at so many weight loss attempts over the year ... and the reason I got fat in the first place... was my head, not my tummy.
Just be very clear and honest with yourself about your motivation for each decision you make along the way. Don't let yourself off the hook with "just because" answers ... challenge yourself to really think about WHY you are deciding to cancel the surgery... and/or WHY you are choosing to go forward with the surgery. That honestly will help you get past vague feelings of guilt, regret, embarassment, or whatever so you get to the heart of your decisions.
And I really hope we continue to see you here. This is a "weight loss forum" and an "obesity help" forum... not a specific "weight loss surgery" forum, after all!
Hope this helps!
