Questions for Barix Babies

Ok, I have some (maybe) weird questions for you all.

Do I need to bring my own PJ's with me, or am I stuck in a hospital gown for my whole stay?

Is there wifi in Barix and if so, will I feel up to posting info to an online class I'll be taking at the time? If not, I can email the instructor, I'm just trying to find out if that's something I need to do or not.

What are visiting hours? Are there any special exceptions for spouses?

TIA, I know you'll all give me great answers.

You are allowed to wear your own pjs definately the next day after surgery - I was in mine the night of surgery.  Make sure they are loose, don't drag on the ground, and the nurses can easily lift up the shirt/pull down the pants a little bit to see the incisions and what not.

Wifi - no.  Or at least, not as of 10/2007  Technically they have it - but it is a locked system and I wasn't able to access it.  I would have felt up to posting a few little things but nothing that required a whole lot of attention - I found myself groggy from the pain meds and anesthesia and what not and couldn't concentrate on things.

I forget the visiting hours exactly...but I think they ended around 8pm.  I know one night hubby stayed a little bit later than that.  And as far as visitors go...just be warned that they are not allowed to bring any food into any of the rooms (out of respect for the new post ops who are struggling to sip their fluids!)  There is a small cafeteria with tables (no food - just an eating area and vending machines) that they can use to eat plus the plethera of restaurants/mall in the area.

Yes, bring PJ's and a robe - and shoes that are easy to slip on/off for your laps. You will get to shower the morning after surgery, best shower of your LIFE! lol and you can get dressed then too.

You won't feel up to posting for a class I am sure.

I don't remember there being visiting hours, my Mom was there with me the night of surgery until after 11. But maybe because I was still coming out of things. Then my PITA roomie the next night had a gaggle of people there until all hours of the night. I think as long as your guests are quiet and respectful they can be there when they need to.

best of luck!

I wore the gowns only because I didn't have any PJs that fit me at the time, but trust me their gowns are BIG and will cover every inch of you and then some - so its really up to you and what you feel most comfortable in. And you're only in there 2-3 days max (normally) and everyone else is strolling around in gowns - no big deal - and that is the beauty of Barix - you're all there for the same reason.

I also agree with Pam and Liz - you may feel up to texting someone to let them know you're okay and to post out here so we know you're okay, but I seriously doubt you'll even feel like taking a class on line, much less being able to do it coherently! LOL!! Get the assignment from your instructor and work on it when you're home and out of that 'foggy' state.

There were only 2 of us on the floor when I had my surgery so they were very lenient with visitors with me - one of my friends couldn't get there til late and since I had a room to myself she was allowed to stay later.

Wish you all the best - Barix is so awesome!! I loved the fact that this was all they did and their total focus is on you, the patient, and the surgery you have.

I know this is shocking I wore my own jammies and flip flops once I could shower it just made me feel better when I went out walking the halls.

Don't bother between walking and napping you will be home in no time to do the school work. Plus as last rumor the network was secured.

As for visitng hours they are pretty laid back as someone that does lots of visiting at Barix...The normal hours I think end at 10 pm but if you are quient and such they do not say too much..Then again ask Lesley we had a party in her room and got reprimanded by nurse Kathy

Also you can call me anytime of you think of anything....

Not weird at all...

Others have addressed the visiting hours (officially 10 am - 8 pm but pretty relaxed) and other stuff...

Just a bit of insight (my surgery was a month ago) about mental processing.  One of the common anesthesia drugs is an amnesia-inducing drug.  That's one of the reasons why many things can feel very foggy in the aftermath of surgery.  It can take up to 10 days for that drug to completely clear your system.  During that time, it's difficult to "save" new memories, so studying can be done but may not be easily recalled later.    You'll also be on pain meds that may "wack you out" a bit (depends on the individual)... so you may not be able to write or speak as clearly as you would otherwise.

You may physically FEEL up to being on the computer... but you may not have a lot of stamina for it and you may also feel like your brain is wrapped in wool for a few days.  So in your shoes, I'd let the instructor know that you're having major surgery (which this is) and that you'll be out of the loop for at least a few days and that you may not be completely "back to normal" online for up to 10 days.  That way, they can adjust expectations and make recommendations accordingly.

Hope this helps!

Ditto to all that has been said thus far, BUT, I also want to warn you that as of 12/07, when I had my hernia repaired, their television station selection sucked!!!!!  I am a sports fan, but it was overkill on sports channels.

Good luck,
Trish

The first day you will stay in the gown but after your shower the next morning you are able to put on your on PJs.

As said before the TV stations suck.  I had my laptop with me and a couple of DVD's to watch in between my laps.

My mom was with me until 10 at night both nights.

If you are a person that sleeps with a fan on you might want to bring a small tabletop fan with you.  I wouldn't of been able to live with out mine.
