Does luck have anything to do with it?

Well.. Im wondering. I talked to a good friend today i have not seen in years. A great person and we went to school together. She is not very overweight at all.. From what i can tell!

Anway we were talking about the surgery and she made the remark. " You are so lucky" ... and when i hear that i think and respond well. Yes i feel exteremly lucky and that i have been given a second chance at life and a new tool. Well she look at me and says. Tool? what do you mean? I tell her how the surgery works and she proceeds to tell me.. Well i dont see it like that ... You were always overweight and you did this to get skinny. and look how good you look. You didnt have to do anything but sit back and let them do the surgery..... GASSSSPPP..

Come on.. im thinking is she really this niave. REALLY. So i start telling her everything i had to do to get this surgery done. 6 months requirments, doc approval, insurance. wieght loss before .. the whole nine.

Well she stands there and says well was it hard to do all that? I told her yes and what was more hard was teaching my self to re eat normally, ballanced and learn to see myself in a different way... She seemed unphathomed. BTW.. We were talking about this while she was eating a glazed corrisant and drinking full fat choc milk. As she ends the conversation. " well im glad i eat healthy.. I try my best to make good decisions!!!!! I wanted to stuff that corrisant where the sun doesnt shine!!

So my question is .... do you feel lucky? and in what ways??

Tanya,
I understand that feeling. There definitely is a stigma attached to WLS. People have a need to put their foot in their mouth. I had to go thru the same thing as you did, lose at least 30lbs prior to having surgery and then have to be on either a doctor or nutritionist monitored diet and learn about portion control but I still get family members who make snide remarks like "you only got skinny because you got the surgery". I am okay with that because I know how hard I have worked to get to my goal. I guess my point is that you need to rise above things like that and be confident that the decision you made is the right one for you. I think between you and I that your friend might be a little envious. I know personally a lot of my family members are. It was okay when I was the big one but suddenly it's not okay that they are now bigger then me. Rise above it and you are right luck has nothing to do with it. You made your own WLS a success.

People comment on my over 100 pound weight loss and attribute it to my WILLpower, but it is my WANTpower: I WANT to be thin and healthy more than anything else!

I feel lucky in so many ways but not because my tool miracuously worked while I was sitting back living life! I EARNED everyone of those pounds!

Why I feel lucky BECAUSE of my surgery
1- finding the most amazing friends in the world with a common thread
2- being pregnant, which was because my fertility was upped by loosing 135+ pounds

3- getting my life back because of loosing the weight
4 - knowing that I will be there to see my great grand children - god willing!!
5- knowing that I WILL be able to keep up with my kids

I could go on and on! lol

LMAO... I will hold her when you shove that stuff where the sun don't shine... When I tell people that I will never have sugar again... that seems like the shocker for them... they make it seem like it is the end of the world... I just roll my eyes lol...

Luck?  I don't think so and you know not so.  I love Pam's husband Brian's "your opinion is not my problem" expression! Its so true.  Don't let it get you down you know in your heart how hard you worked to get where you are and the one thing I swear I will never ever do is justify myself for doing this to anyone.  They don't sign my paycheck, sleep next to me, break bread with me or live with me so therefor I don't give a damn what they think if its negative.  So what!  My life, my choice. Yup chocolate milk and doughnuts!  Keep on eating them and lets see where she ends up with her "healthy ??? Good decisions?  I don't think so. One day it will catch up with her and if not well who cares.  I always say living well is the best revenge. Keep up the good work.

There are always going to be people who no matter how much information you give them about the surgery or try to educate them about how this is a life-long change in every way...they will still say "Well sure she looks good but she had to get the surgery to do it...."

You know what?? Who cares?? Because I guarantee if  the roles were reversed and she had been the overweight one ...she would have done everything she could have to get healthy.  We caan not worry about what the world thinks of us for having the surgery.  We had to do it for ourselves and if you are at peace with your decision thenn that is alll that matters.....

You did this ---you were courageous enough to know that you had to have the surgery in order to live a full life and a longer life.  Look at how far you have come and what a wonderful journey it has been....You did what was right for you and in the end that is all that matters!!!!!!

(So take her croissant and shove it right up her nose!!!! LOL)

Much luv!!

In certain ways I feel lucky - I feel lucky that I finally woke up to the realization that I was killing myself with my excessive weight - I feel lucky that I found Barix on line and they were located in an area that I could get to - I feel lucky that my husband and two of my best friends went with me to my initial consultation and came away knowing it was the best decision for me.

I feel lucky that the insurance company and my family doctor and Dr Boe helped me through the processes and I was able to lose 50 lbs prior to surgery making it even safer for me. I feel lucky to have found Dr Boe and the whole team at Barix to help me with my journey.

And I feel lucky when I can tell people my story - sure, sometimes I get the 'OH' look when people find out I had bypass surgery, like it was the easy way out, but then I feel lucky because I tell them how hard I work at it - that its not a quick fix - that I watch what I eat and exercise - because I am educating people along the way so they don't make ignorant remarks about fat people and bypass being the 'easy' way out.

Your girlfriend should feel lucky you didn't shove that bun up her butt!! Healthy eating? OMG she consumed 2 days worth of calories and fat in that one sitting - and you know what? Someday she won't be so lucky and her metabolism may just catch up to her and she'll be calling you asking you about RNY and how she can have it!!

Tanya,

I feel very lucky to live in a time where such intervention by medicine can help a person like myself achieve a measure of health that I only dreamed about, not to mention I feel each day as though I am living life fully again!

As for your friend, generally speaking, people who have not had the same struggles don't get it, sometimes, even those who have had weight issues don't get why we would chose to do this and that is why I continuously tout support because to my way of seeing it, only those on the same path can truly understand just what this takes.

Hugs, Laureen

Tanya,
I feel so lucky every day that I was able to get the surgery. This tool gave me a second chance at life. Most people think it is a quick fix and you are "taking the easy way out". but they just do not understand. You know how hard you have worked and how you have to keep working at making good choices - that is all that really matters. You can try to educate these people, but some will just not get it.
