Good Afternoon Everyone!!! Yeah I am a late person to get up!! I have a weird schedule and actually not one at all!! So which means I need some help with that. I think I need to get myself on a better schedule before surgery!!! Today did some exercising wit the hubby. I am having a hard time with losing the ten pounds I have to before Thursday's Pats!!! I had lost 5 lbs after my Consult which was Way back in December and was able to keep it off..however..NOW...I went to the drs last week and well..I gained it back...so I am where I was at to start with...Oh Lord and then to lose the ten pounds and keep it off until my surgery JUNE 17th!!! What do I do? Okay well. I asked this question before..and I was going to do the Slim Fast diet..HOwever...Slim fast has lots of sugar in it!! And as far as I know we have to stay away from sugar 2 weeks before our surgery...So what the heck did everyone eat? I know they gave me a sample diet thingy to loook at..but some of the foods on there I do not like!!! Plus, I am hurting for cash and have no money...so..Slim Fast is wayy to expensive for me as I am noticing anywayss..because I was told about the Slim Fast that is only 1 g of sugar for the low carb kind!! UUMM hellooo!!! I went to Wal-Mart..to find this..and well..4 cans of that stuff is like 6 dollars!!!! Okay so If i were to drink 2 a day...that is 84 dollars a week of Slim Fast!!! UUmm way out of my budget...LOL.. Me and my Hubby only spend 40 dollars a week on Food. That is our Budget. We live off of Cereal, eggs, bread, and sandwich meat and lots of chicken because its cheap...mostly...and raman noodles..and well anything we can get for 40 dollars. I see that this surgery and the diet is going to kill us money wise because all this stuff I have to buy is so expensive!!!! Has anyone else had this problem and what did you eat to lose your weight when you are on a budget??? HELPP!!!

Unfortunately the "good for you foods" are typically more expensive. There are less expensive options though. You are going to have to invest in some protein powder post-op to get you through the first few weeks. Stick to just meat and veggies, eggs are a great source of protein as is yogurt, ricotta cheese and cottage cheese and these items are fairly inexpensive. Just cut out the carbs - no more breads, pastas, ramen noodles etc and that should help get the 10 pounds off. Stick with lean meats, fish and chicken - tuna is great too. Also make sure you are drinking at least 64 ounces of decaffinated, non-carbonated liquids.

Hope that this helps!!!

Bean and lentils... Cheap when they are canned.  Even cheaper per serving when you make your own --- take the dehydrated beans from a bag and boil them!

I found a powdered protein I liked at Vitamin World.   It was $10.99 (on sale) for a two pound jar --about 25 servings.  It's the store brand and comes in chocolate (my fav) vanilla and strawberry. Each serving gives about 18 grams of protiein and 3 carbs.

I enjoy home brewed decaf iced tea.  again, much cheaper cause you make it yourself.

Hi Denise -
My PAT's are June 1 (surgery June 23) and I'm going on a vacation next week.  My best friend had surgery with Dr. Boe at Barix.  He puts his patients on a 10 day liquid diet .  My friend lost 10 or 12 pounds in 10 days.  I decided to put myself on a self-inflicted liquid diet (95%) prior to vacation and then I'll do it again the week before PAT's.  Dr. Pupkova doesn't require liquid diet, but I thought I would give it a try since I'll have to do it anyway after surgery.

I've only been doing it for 3 days so far and I think that I have already lost 5 pounds.  Here is what I ate today:
B - Carnation instant breakfast shake (no sugar added) w/ 1 c. 1 % milk
S - low sodium chicken bouillon (dry powder packets)
L - protein shake (made with water)
S - low sodium beef bouillon
D - mozzarella cheese
      Carnation shake with strawberries

The Carnation shakes are approx. $5.50 for 8 packs in a box
The dry bouillon approx. $1.00 for 8 packets in a box
And here and there, I've had diet hot cocoa, which I found for approx. $2.50 per box
and Special K protein water.  It's on sale at Kmart this week - 2 boxes for $6.00
My protein shake was from samples that I had sent away from, but you could buy some protein at Wal-Mart.

Based on all of the research that I have done, protein products are on the expensive side and unfortunately, that's the way it is for a while until you are far enough out to begin getting your protein from foods.

You can buy the protein powders at walmart and use them in shakes and add them to yogurts and such. remember that after surgery there is quit a commit of $ for supplements, proteins and such.

Hi Denise,

I certainly can empathize... but there are some good options that won't break the bank, both before and after surgery.

So right now your diet as you describe it is really REALLY high in sodium, which is likely making you retain water like crazy.  The Ramen noodles, sandwich meat, many breads, and cereals are all culprits in that (Ramen being the WORST).  Cut them out, up your fluids to 64 oz of CLEAR (non-sugared, non juices) liquids and you'll pee like crazy and probably drop a surprising amount of weight.

Look at how you're prepping your foods... you eat a lot of chicken, but is it fried?  breaded? in creamy sauces?  Try broiling or grilling it with some basic spices... use a light wine-based sauce with no cream (or substitute fat free evap milk for cream in the recipes).  Steam some fresh veggies or use frozen veggies with no added sauces or butters, then use a spice grinder or some Mrs. Dash on top for flavor.  Spray with Olivio or I can't believe it's not butter spray to reduce the fat but leave the buttery flavor.

if you simply must have deli meats, try getting a low-sodium beef or turkey or chicken, spreading it with fat free cream cheese and sprinkle with some chives (frozen or dried work and are really cheap), then rolling it up, slicing into little rounds and eating it.  No bread that way!

As someone else posted, the Carnation Instant Breakfast SF is way cheaper than Slim Fast and better nutritionally.  Move to skim milk from whole milk to cut out more fat and mix with that.

Look for fresh veggies instead of prepared, look for sales and coupons on fresh and non-sauced frozen veggies, check out your local farmer's market (you can get great prices on fresh veggies)... whatever you can prepare yourself is likely to be cheaper than stuff you're paying others to prepare... and you are also in control of ingredients, which will be REALLY important afterward.

Hope this helps!
