Let us know what you hear from teh Dr. The ideas I have

The spelt - a whole grain, sometimes cream cheese does it to me, eggs get me most of the time!, salad -green can go right through you. Gorgonzola is typically a higher fat cheese, yogurt might not sit so well... Good luck! I hope that you can get this resolved quickly - potty issues suck! Oh and the juice too - that can make matters worse too. Depending on what is going on. These are just some observations and I could be TOTALLY off base - but when I get like that I do the same thing with my diet - over analize EVERYTIHNG!

Can I ask why - if you know you are already becoming lactose intolerant - you are eating dairy at every meal?  Cream cheese, gorgonzola cheese, and yogurt?  Remember that milk is not the only thing to avoid when you're lactose intolerant.  ALL dairy products - butter, cheeses and yogurt and ice cream and frosting - contain lactose and can cause you symptoms.  Are you at least taking LactAid supplements with these meals to prevent the side effects of lactose intolerance?

The juice itself could be a problem, too.  Sugar is a natural laxative (Lactulose - not lactose - is actually given to babies and children for constipation, since it is so effective), so it could be speeding your GI tract along too quickly.   Diluted or not, it could be causing you some dumping in the form of diarrhea.  So cut out the juice - it's empty calories, anyway - and see if that helps.

Also, are you eating/drinking a lot of sugar free products?  Sugar alcohols (such as sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, and others) make some of the best sugar free sweeteners, but they can cause massive gas.  So check your diet for all SF items (including gum, candies, and beverages) and read the nutritional information labels.  Even a few of these a day can cause massive gas and diarrhea.

When you call the doctor make sure you have a food log in front of you to backup what you've been eating.  It could be one thing that your not aware of that is doing it.

Some days your the dog and some days your the hydrant.

IF he doesn't call you back soon I would call and ask to talk to the nurse! Make sure you are staying hydrated - that is a big worry when we get diarreah.

Hope things are better today!

I am a medical transcriptionist and I do mostly GI work.  This sounds to me like overflow stooling.  If what you're saying is that your stools had been solid (as in firm or even hard) before this liquid stool began, that is.

The job of the intestinal tract is two fold.  First, as we all know, it absorbs the nutrients from our food.  Second, it resorbs water from our stool to prevent dehydration.  When stools move too slowly through the GI tract (and with little input in terms of food, that is how it goes), much more water is resorbed from the stool, and they become hard and difficult to pass.  This is constipation.

When the hard stools are difficult to pass, they can become obstructive to the newer stool coming down the intestinal tract behind it.  The newer stool is wetter, as it has not had its water resorbed from it, and it can (sorry for the visual here, folks) squeeze around and past the obstructive hard stool, appearing for all intents and purposes to be diarrhea.

"Peristalsis" is the movement of the GI tract, which works much like a hand squeezing water through a tube.  The GI tract is one long, continuous tube.   When you start eating, the peristaltic motion that carries your food from the mouth to the stomach continues all the way to the end of the GI tract.  This is called the gastrocolic reflex.  So when you eat, you start the ball rolling, and it doesn't stop until it reaches the far end.

If I understood your post correctly, this could explain why, immediately after eating, you have the urgency and liquid stools that you're describing.  If so, talk to your surgeon about slowly introducing (and gradually increasing) the amount of fiber in your diet.  He may also wish to have to do a "clean out" with a gentle laxative product like Miralax to get you started.

Sorry to hear that you haven't gotten an answer back!  My doc once told me that it's MUCH harder to turn someone away in PERSON.  So if you're really desperate, SHOW UP AT THE OFFICE first thing in the morning and just tell them you'll wait all day as long as it takes.  They'll rush to squeeze you in because they don't want other patients to see you waiting in there all day - ESPECIALLY if you're running to the potty every five minutes!!!!

So stop the other dairy (cheese, butter, yogurt, ice cream, etc.) OR add LactAid.  Cut out any SF products sweetened with sugar alcohols, and cut out the juice.  See if that all helps.  If not, ask the doc about the possibilty of constipation and overflow issues (IF that matches your symptoms based on my other post).

There are LactAid enzymes that you take with a meal that contains dairy, but there is also a long acting 12 hour or 24 hour LactAid now, so you can just take it every  morning and then not worry about it all day - if that's the problem.

GOOD LUCK and feel better soon!

You are making me think of this story on Mystery Diagnosis where a woman had some odd gallbladder problem (I wish I could remember the name) where it all the sudden starts producing WAY too much bile.  She had the runs really bad and it got to the point where she couldn't leave her house without crapping herself!  She had planned her day around where the public restrooms were, etc.  but even that stopped being enough!  She finally found the doctor who discovered that disorder and he put her on some med that slows down the gallbladder function - and now she's FINE.

Listen, LactAid milk is good.  BUT considering how many other dairy items you enjoy (yogurt, cheese, etc.) you should buy the tablets so that you can eat all the dairy you want (and get that calcium!). :)

Start keeping a journal of what you eat every day and when you have the runs.  Keep a little notebook in your purse and write down every meal.  Then keep one for tracking your bathroom habits, and see if your doc can help you narrow down what foods may be causing the problem.
