mood swings
I have been reading "Anatomy of a Food Addiction" (by Anne Katherine), which has been tremendously enlightening. Her premise is based on changes in brain chemistry that have occurred in our brains over the years due to the types of foods many of us eat (high in sugar, refined carbs, and fats). During the "withdrawal" phase (which literally can mimic withdrawal from drugs or alcohol because of the brain chemicals and physiology involved), we can experience all of the typical things that addicts experience, including intense mood swings, depression, cravings, etc.
The book is WELL worth reading and working through the exercises for anyone who has done any binge eating, compulsive eating, binge-purge, or has ever felt out of control of their eating patterns.

It can be related to a WHOLE bunch of things.
Estrogen is stored in fat. So for females out there...as you are rapidly losing weight the fat is being broken down...and all that estrogen is pouring out of the cells into your system causing havock.
On an every day basis, mine have settled down and did so before the one year mark. However...when it comes to that lovely time of the month...I am an emotional wreck, even more so than I used to be before surgery.
Talk to your family about this when you are NOT in a bad mood...explain to them that if you go a little nutty on them, you certainly don't mean to...and then get really good at making up for things! LOL I was lucky - I have a very understanding husband who lets most things roll off his back. So....I would go hay wire and he wouldn't blink twice.
Hang tough!

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.
