I have NEVER been more miserable in my entire life

I began my 10 day liquid diet on Monday. Today is Thursday.  I have already lost 13 pounds.  WHAT?!?!?!?!?!  I am beyond straving, completely light-headed, exhausted, can't concentrate on work and absolutely miserable.  I can't sleep at night because I need to pee everyhour on the hour. I can not believe I have another week of this.  I have no idea how I'm doing to get through the next hour...forget about the next week.  Oh my god, I'm STARVING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Did I mention yet just how hungry I am??????????  AHHHHHHHH

Oh I have been there. I think I can say we all have been there.  It's hard, but you will do much better in surgery if you stick to it.  At least that is what my DR said.  She also told me after surgery she could tell I stuck to the liguid diet.  I know it's hard.  I had surger 6 months ago and I will never eat any broth or jello again in m life, but that's just me.

Get sugar free icepops something to keep you going.  go out and walk if you can to get your mind off the food.  just stay out of the kitchen...drink lots lots lots of fluid and make sure you are getting your protein...when you wake up from surger you wont remember the hunger and you will be so happy

I feel your pain.  The liquid diet really, really sucks.  Unfortunately, there's no way around it, so you just have to suck it up!  Here a few suggestions:

Be sure to drink a protein shake at least three times a day.  The shake will help keep you feeling satisified.

When eating broth, be sure to buy real soup and just discard all the noodles, veggies, etc.  Real soup is much tastier than just plain old broth.  Be sure to buy the low sodium soup....don't want to retain the water.

Fill in your day with SF jello and SF Ice Pops.  The Ice Pops saved my life.

Chew lots of SF gum.  It will help with your urge to chew.  It also made me a little more thirsty, which helped with getting in my 64 ozs of water each day.

After about day 5 the hunger goes away and it gets a little easier.  Just keep in mind the reason for the liquid diet, which is to shrink the liver and allow Dr. Boe to get to the parts he needs to get to much easier.

Hang in.  You are in for a wild ride, and this is just the beginning.  Good luck to you and be sure to keep us posted.

Ugh, I'm sorry to hear you're so miserable from the liquid diet!  I'm not going to blow smoke, YES it does SUCK.  It will be worth it next week at this time, but for now, yes, major suckage.

I did a self-imposed liquid diet (I had to lose weight after I came back from an all-inclusive in Can****wo weeks before surgery) and the shake I used has some carbs so it fought that light-headed feeling. It was Syntha-6, both the strawberry milkshake and the chocolate mint.  I also drank diluted juice (esp. grape) to help.  In my case, I knew it was the carb de-tox that was causing the headaches, so I knew I couldn't go completely cold turkey.

Not sure if any of this helps or not.  It will get better though.  One more week.  168 hours.  YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Hmmm.... 13 pounds in 4 days, light-headed, exhausted, can't concentrate.... STARVING...

your body is telling you that you're not giving it the fuel it needs to function, which probably means that your liquid diet is not nutritionally balanced.  Make sure you're getting both protein and carbs, as well as a little fat.  Liquid diet does not mean clear liquids only (unless that's what your dr prescribed)... so drink milk (lowfat/nonfat, soy, rice, hemp, whatever), high-protein soup (NOT just broth... soup that has had vegetables simmered in it and then removed), V8 (low sodium), protein shake (SF, if your Dr allows it), yogurt, etc.  Keep track of your protein and fat intake, but this should really help you feel better and alleviate some of the hunger.

And for the light at the end of the tunnel, keep in mind that after the surgery, you won't be feeling hunger for quite a while, so the post-surg liquid diet is MUCH easier!

Hope this helps,
Karen

That's a bit disturbing. Like whenever Bugs Bunny gets hungry in a cartoon and everybody starts turing into food.

You guys have completely cracked me up and for a minute (sadly, just a minute) my stomach stopped screaming.  THANK YOU!!!!

I'm drinking Atkins Choc Shakes (4/day), water, decaf coffee, popsicles, fudgicles, SFpudding and jello and I'm still STRAVING!!!!  I think I'll just sleep the week away.

I'm a single mom and sending Little Boy to his dad's tomorrow until May 23rd so I won't need to care for him AND myself after surgery.  So after tomorrow I don't have to be "on," don't have to go out, don't have to do anything but work and SLEEP!  I'm a psychotherapist and I've so distracted since not eating in DAYS and Days and DAYS that this really isn't very helpful for my clients. So I may just stay home next week, watch Lifetime and nap all day.  Oooohhhhh, sounds perfect!  Wake up just in time for next Thursday's surgery.  OK, now I have a plan!  LOL.  Thank you all!!!!!!!!

Honestly, you are lucky. I wasn't allowed pudding or jello on mine. PURE liquids only. It was torture the first few days. I cried and thought I was just going to break down and eat a cheeseburger.

But I realized I had just spent 6 months going through tests and preparation to get me to the point of having a surgery date and get on with my new life. And that is the only thing that got me through.

There weren't support groups and forums to go to when in need. And family wasn't very supportive, so I was on my own. It was tough but I knew I wanted to have the surgery and I had to do what I had to do.

You WILL get through this. It isn't always easy but.......

NOTHING WORTH HAVING COMES EASY! Just try to remember that. You can get through it and you can do this. Have faith in yourself.

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!

Jodi, you are SO right!!!!!  Wow, when was the last time someone told you that.  Just appreciate that for a second.  LOL.  OK, on with it.

I actually called the nutrition department crying yesterday telling them I was so hungry I wanted a pizza.  She suggested milk instead.   LOL.  Now seriously, how exactly do the 2 compare?  BUT, I did go out and buy low fat milk today.  Milk over pizza?!?!?!?!  I'm hysterical!
