dealing with head hunger
So WOW am i dealing with the munchies tonight! I don't know why all of a sudden tonight, but I'm having all kinds of nasty cravings. I know I'm not physically hungry - this is literally the head hungries and it's really tough to fight.
Possibly the weather...and not having walked today (the weather meant that I did a different workout routine)... I dunno. Something!
So how do you guys deal with it and does it get better over time as you "work the plan"?

Hi Karen,
Yeah that sounds familiar. Head Hunger still happens to me and I am almost 15 months out. I usually much on healthy snacks when that happens, for you this might be tough since you just had your surgery. I used to go walking but you did not get to do that today because of the weather I went to the mall believe it or not window shopping was a lot of fun and got my walk in as well. Also watching movies on DVD not TV since TV has so many commercials for FOOD. Hang in there it is tough but you recognize that it is head hunger so that's the first step and I also took up knitting I sucked at it but I did that so I could keep busy. Hope that helps.

I still have head hunger and I am almost 3 years out! The truth is I don't think it ever truly goes away. I am actually thinking of going to Overeaters' Anonymous - I have been very successful, having lost 120lbs and haven't gained any back - I work out a lot, etc... and still food calls out my name... A LOT.
My advice - keep busy.. DONT sit in front of the television... don't keep any foods in the house that you can munch on... Good luck

Lou,
Thank for bringing up OA. At the Sat support group, the leader Shauna (OMG wonderful!) was talking a bit about food addiction and recommended a book (Anatomy of a Food Addiction), which I have on order from Amazon. And that got me thinking about OA and whether that might not be an appropriate way to address some of the issues that got me fat in the first place.
I can't tell you how many times I've thought "I KNOW it's self-destructive to eat this... I KNOW I will feel horrible afterward... " and eaten it anyway. And the food calling my name part is horrible.
Unfortunately, I can't really purge the house of munchable food, because I live with 4 other people - spouse, 2 teenagers, and my elderly mom. But I am working really hard on keeping busy and trying to develop an attachment to exercise. I'm also setting up a list of non-food rewards for myself (and THAT's a tough list to come up with).
But thank you for your perspective and advice. It does help!

Hi Karen
first of all - I love Shauna and you tell her that she promised me that she would come to PIttsburgh and we were going to get our belly button's pierced together !!! and I am still waiting!
The book is wonderful - I passed it on to a friend who had the surgery, lost 150lbs and gained 100 back and it helped her a lot! Read it
Keep in mind that "munchable food" doesn't do anyone any good - your mom, your kids - they don't need it either - I don't keep it in the house, if you want to eat in my house, you have to eat healthy - but maybe I am meaner than you
You are reaching out to others, writing about it on the boards, and trying to substitute others things in place of food - you are on the right track. Keep it up and good luck!
