A little freaked out......

Hi All -
My best friend had surgery down at Barix today. As of a text message around noon, she was out of surgery and in recovery. I figured all was well.

My plan was to go down with her sister-in-law to see her tonight.  I was getting in the car to go down to see her and her husband had texted me saying that she was having some trouble and to hold off coming down.  I was super worried  .  By the time I was able to get a hold of him, he said that she was doing a little better just in the last 45 minutes since he had texted me.  She was having really bad gas pains and they were getting her up to walk her around the hallway.  Although I don't have all the details, it sounds like she is coming around.  Thank goodness.

So, along with being super worried about my bestest friend in the whole world, my thoughts immediately crept towards being a little freaked out and scared about my own upcoming surgery.

Anyhow...thanks for listening...just had to get it out.

Hi Lisa
That is scary- glad she's doing better. :)

I know what you mean about being freaked out, but hang in there- sounds like all is well.

Don't worry.  The first few hours after surgery are not pretty.  I was brought up to my room and surrounded by my IV, a catheter bag and just plain zonked for the most part.  My poor family was there, and they probably thought they were watching me on my last leg.  Then, the nurses got me out of bed, and walking.  That's a sight in itself.  Bags and IVs and me half-zonked.

Hope your friend is doing better.

Hugs,
Trish

It is a major surgery and like Trish said the first few hrs are not pretty. I dont even remember my visitors and could have cared less who came by until the next day

I'm going down to see her tomorrow night.  I'm sure that she will be much better by then.  I'm expecting a call from her parents after they leave Barix, so I will get a better idea what's going on.

Thanks all -
Lisa

The GAS is the worst after surgery; usually through that first night.  Walking laps around the floor and using the pain button is the quickest and best way to relieve it.   You don't want to tense up by sucking up to it, that just makes it worse.  Use the pain meds.  You'll get it in the upper portion of your body, sometimes feeling like a knife stabbing through your shoulder blades or pulsating.   Should be gone about 12 hrs after surgery.   Your friend will be much better in a few hours as that passes.   Don't be scared, it really does pass quickly.

Hi there - I am only 30 days post-op and have to tell you the first 36 hours were yucky - but after that you will hopefully start to realize what a wonderful thing you just did for yourself and those who will be able to love you for so much longer than they would have if you had not had the surgery!  I have been having my emotional ups and downs, but I physically feel great and can't believe it has only been a month since the best day of my life!  It is normal to be worried and I am sure, with the support of your bestest friend, you will do great through the most difficult time!  (And LOVE THAT PAIN MED!!!!)

Unfortunately, gas is a common issue right after surgery.  Yes, it does hurt.  But, it also goes away.  Some people aren't affected by it....my best friend was gas free.  I, on the other hand, put up with it for 2 days.  It finally went away, when i was able to lay flatter at home in my own bed.  Don't let it worry you to the point where you are frightened.  There are ways to curb the gas pains....peppermint tea is a great one.

The first 24 hours can be difficult - and the gas pains can be down right excruciating.  but they are temporary.  And getting up and walking is the best best BESTEST thing one can do to A) help prevent them and B)  Help them ease up.

It's normaly to be scared before surgery.  Think back to when you made the decision...when you knew why you were doing it...before the emotions got you all in a tizzy.

And stay close to here - we'll get you through!

No worries, I'm sure she is experiencing very normal post op stuff. I however had no gas pains ever so it's not a given you wil have them. For me I just felt like total crap from the anesthesia and I had a lot of nausea. I didn't want to see anyone, even my family.

I'm sure your friend will be fine in a few days and I would worry if you get there today and she's not jumping up and down to see you.
