Medical ID bracelets
Hi All - but specifically Pam...since she works in the hospital.
Question: Does the ER really take notice of the medical ID bracelets? Particularly if they are a beaded jewelry like version rather than typical stainless steel.
I don't want to waste my money on a fancy ID bracelet that wouldn't be noticed by emergency personnel anyway.
Do I even need one? I have no other medical issues other than the fact that I will be an WLS person.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Lisa

I am like you in being concerned with the "fancy" beaded versions. So I bought a simple silver link bracelet with one dangle charm, and a typical medic alert plate. I believe that every one of us should have one. The one thing that keeps going through my mind is this. If I am in a bad vehicle accident, any scans or maybe even emergency surgery is a real possibility. I don't want a surgeon freaking out cause my insides are "scrambled". I want the medical team to know that my insides are supposed to be scrambled, I would hate for something to have been ripped lose in an accident and be put back together by a surgeon who didn't realize that my parts shouldn't be where a normal person's would be. That would be a serious disappointment to wake up to. Just my thoughts, and I hope I never actually need to rely on my bracelet, but I would much rather be safe than sorry. Belinda

As a former fireman I don`t like fancy. Simple dog tag or bracelet with med alert sign and just simple info:
Gastric Bypass RNY
No NSAIDs
No NG Tube

I asked Pam (and her husband) this same question - they are both former EMT and Pam is a nurse - They both told me, but Her husband more emphatically - PLAIN AND SIMPLE! if it is too fancy they think that it is jewelery and it gets looked over! He said that if you don't want to wear something put it in your wallet with your drivers license. If you don't have ID on your person that is the first place they look!

I got one about a month after surgery. It is plain stainless steel bracelet that has exactly what Kutzro said... I took it straight from his post when the topic came up last time. Liz has dog tags with the same stuff. The only thing I added was a Lidocaine allergy that I have.
I have not taken it off since I got it. I hardly notice it anymore.
