1 week post op from Univ Penn Baritric-Horrible
I had surgery last Tuesday 4/7 and was discharged Friday 4/10. I was given a 3 day pain prescription. I am still in a great deal of pain but when I called my Dr.'s office, I was basically called a "big baby" and told that something must be wrong with me so I will have to come into the office to get checked. I think this is a crock of **** I have had numerous surgeries over the years and was always given enough pain meds at least until the 2 week follow-up. Am I a big baby or is it normal to only be in pain for 3 days after this surgery?
YES! I was in pain and/or uncomfortable for more than 3 days. However I didn't have pain meds given to last my 2 weeks before I got checked either. I had pain meds for about 3-5 days. I can't remember exactly.
I just walked around and moved as often as possible because that is what helps with alot of the pain as far as stiffness, soreness, and the unbelievable gas pains afterwards.
I am not sure if it's individual or not. I would assume that not everyone recovers the same. My BFF had RNY last month and was on meds for the first few days and that's all she had too. Maybe it depends on each situation.
Good luck with your appt and I hope all is well with you.

Everyone is different when it comes to pain...I didn't take anything other then tylenol from the day after I got home except at night time to help sleep more then anything. Only you know if you will are in pain. If it is gas pains from surgery you may try to walk as much as you can handle to pass the gas but I would still follow up with the docotors visit to make sure you are OK!
Good Luck!

You don't say if you had open or lapriscopic RNY and that can make a huge difference. Most people who have had open surgeries are in a great deal more pain than those who have had it done lap. I had mine done lap and had very little pain. Everyone is different, tho. It may pay for you to go back to the surgeon to make sure you don't have an internal infection or something like that causing you so much pain. And don't let the dr's office bully you - stand your ground because this is YOUR body and its telling you something isn't right.
Wish you all the best - keep us posted.

Hi Lynn! I had my RNY surgery the same day, 4/7/09. I was in moderate pain for about 4 days. I only had to take tylenol (650mg.) for it. However, I got migraines about 3 x per day! (UGH!). It was the worst week of my life! But hang in there. Take one day at a time. It does get better each and every day!!
I think getting rechecked by your doctor is a good thing. Better to be told it is nothing than find out later on down the road it is something serious.
I too, took basically only Tylenol during the day and the pain meds for a few nights at home to help me sleep.
I walked and walked and walked as much as I could. I had a burning pain in my lower left incision for the first 2 weeks, it went away for a week, and then came back on week 3 and lasted another wee****il week four. It made bending difficult and such things but it was basically tolerable.
Everyone is different, so follow up with your doc, and if you are in pain and they find nothing wrong, tell them you are obviously healing slower than expected and you need something to get you through that. "Pain is what the patient says it is" is a common saying in most facilities these days.

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.

I was sent home from Open RNY with Liquid Loritab. However, I was told that I would not be able to drive until it was out of my system. Considering the fact that the Loritab did nothing for the soreness or throbbing, I opted to take nothing at all and made sure I was out and about as soon as possible.
