On my pre-op liquid diet

My stomach is growling.  I started it yesterday.  Did pretty good.  Drank lots of water/propel/crystal light.  Today, still sticking with it but my stomach is growling so bad!  This is so hard!  I didn't do too bad yesterday with feeling hungry.  Today, I am famished!  AND I have to go to work tonight for a 12 hr shift!  I hope it gets easier as the week goes on.

Then Saturday, we are having my son's 5th birthday party since I won't be up to it the weekend of his actual birthday(4/26)...no birthday cake for me.

Pre-op liquid diets sound like torture.  I think you are very courageous and brave for sticking it out.  I am also thankful I didn't have to do one.  Keep up the good fight!

I did one. 10 days of being a grouch. But I made it through. You manage to because you know you have to. Plus each day does get a little easier and you find you don't think about it as much. Try to stay as busy as you can, that helps with not thinking about it too much!

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!

warm broth and SF popsicles were my life savers during the process. I only had to do it for 2 days, but the broth really helped when I was hungry.  The popsicles made me think I was being bad!! I still eat the popsicles now.. they help me to get my liquids in.

THank GOd I only had 12 hours of liquids.

Are you allowed "full" liquids? That can include jello and yogurt usually - oh and protein shakes! That will at least make you more full - or is a clear liquid diet? Jello is usually still considered - check with your surgeon though! I found that in my post op liquid phase I missed eating with a utensil! Getting everything from a glass bugged me...

Keeping yourself busy definately does help and so should drinking constantly - of course then you are peeing constantly! lol

Good luck!

Liz

The liquid diet sucks, there's no getting around that.  Due to cir****tances beyond my control, I was on it for 17 days!  Here are my suggestions:

Protein Shakes - they are absolutely necessary to keep you from feeling totally famished.  Have one for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Broth - buy regular soup, heat it up, and throw away all the noodles, veggies, etc.  Plain broth is awful, but the broth you get in a regular can of soup is rather tasty.  Also, be sure to get the low salt kind....don't want to start retaining water and putting on weight

SF Popsicles - an absolute must have to get you through the really tough times.

SF Jello - I'm not a fan of Jello, but I ate it just because I could.

After day 4 or 5 the hunger will go away.  But the wish to chew won't, so buy lots of SF gum.  It won't completely do the trick, but it will help.

I lost 21 lbs on the liquid diet.   It's hard, but you'll get through it.  Just keep looking at that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.  It's there waiting for you.  This is the start of an amazing journey, so hold on and enjoy every moment of it!

OH- I feel for you.   I start my pre-op liquid diet a week from today.   I believe its only clear fluids.  I see the surgeon tomorrow, so I will double check the routine.
If its any consolation, I hear that by day 3 the devastating hunger starts to pass.....

Saw the surgeon today- he said full liquids.  Glad I clarified.
he also said he isn't very "strict" with it... not sure what that means.  Seems that every surgeon has a different plan....

It's definately not a fun time - but sounds like you are doing FANTASTIC!! Keep up the great work!
