Anti-depressants x-post
Hi all, I'm 23 and a bit over 3 months out, and I've had some issues with depression for a while. I never really did anything about it, but even now after having lost a substantial amount of weight, my depression still persists and I'm ready to address it with a doctor. My main concern with taking anti-depressants is that they'll cause weight gain, and I really don't want that. Any suggestions for medications to bring up to my doctor? Also, what types of questions might I ask him? Thanks
Hi,
Not all anti-depressants have that effect. Prior to WLS I attended a eating disorders program to understand my compulsive eating. They pointed out to me that I was depressed and suggested I try an anti-depressant and because I was dealing with compulsive eating they knew I didn't want anything that was going to add more weight. I understand that Wellbutrin doesn't generally have a bad effect on weight. I never gained weight on it. I also have tried Effexor and Cymbalta and none of those made me gain weight.. I am told Paxil can cause weight gain as a side effect.
The most important thing is to be upfront and honest about what you are going through, and what's floating through your mind and open your mind to help - its hard when you are depressed.
One of the best self-help books I have ever read about depression is : "Feeling Good: the New Mood Therapy" by Dr. David Burns. It basically takes a cognitive therapy approach -i.e. your moods arise out of your thoughts and if you can identify and change the faulty thinking, you can improve your mood." Its a lot of infomation and a lot of stuff they have you write down, but I find when I do it , it really helps -- check it out at your local library and see if it speaks to you.
At any rate, congratulations to you for taking steps to make your life the best it can be. Good luck!

oh my...im in the same boat as you sister, just a few years ahead of you.
i started antidepressants 1 year after my surgery....i've gained 20 pounds in 6 months. it could be a lot of other factors, but i totally think that my metabolism has changed...
im still trying to figure it out, but definitely email me if you need to chat more.

Hi!
I started anti depressants around 9 years ago and can't imagine being without them now!
it not only helped my mood, but now my fear of public speaking is gone. I still have some anxiety, esp. now that surgery is approaching quickly
.
I plan to continue them after surgery- hopefully that is okay with the surgeon.
I went off them while going through fertility treatments and definitely noticed a difference. I am actually a licensed MH Professional and truly believe that alot of it is brain chemistry.
