Pre-Op Weight Loss
Hi all -
Dr. Pupkova at Barix requests that I lose 7 pounds before surgery. I have 2 months plus before my surgery date. My question is - what if I lose more than that? Could this affect my insurance coverage? My BMI is well over 40, so I would really have to lose a lot to get under 40, but I'm concerned that if I went in with any sort of substantial loss, whether or not the insurance would have a problem with that. Would they even know?
Also, Dr. Pupkova does not require the 2 week liquid diet as Dr. Boe does. Is there any advantage (or disadvantage) to doing it anyway? I haven't rec'd my surgery packet yet from Barix, so I"m not even sure what pre-op prep for Dr. P will consist of.
Thanks in advance for any info. /advice.

Lisa your paperwork is going to be submited with the current weight you are so weight loss leading up to surgery will not be in the records. You will be fine on that level.
If you lose the weight Dr. P requires you will be fine for surgery and as of last year her pre surgery requirement was a bowel prep the night before the day before surgery with that day being clear liquids only.
Normally Dr. Boe does not give a weight loss requirement (I think) prior to surgery so during those 10 days his patients drop weight.
All of the weight loss is a good thing prior to surgery because it reduces the fat in the liver and they have to move it during surgery...You are going to do great!
Also the more you lose prior the better I had to drop 10 pounds and was so worried turns out I had lost 21 the day of surgery.

I had Dr Boe and between my 3 month insurance requirement program (fitness program, private nutritionist, etc) and then Dr Boe's 10 day liquid diet I lost 50 lbs from my initial consult to the day of surgery - the only thing that was said was Dr Boe asking if I had lost 50 lbs why did I need him! He was joking of course because at that point I was in pre-op getting ready for my surgery, but he was thrilled that I had lost so much prior to surgery because it made it that much easier. Granted I was much heavier than you are (my BMI was in the 60's), but every little bit you can lose prior to surgery will definitely help, and once insurance has approved you you really don't deal with them any more.
So best of luck to you - follow Dr P's advice - she is your surgeon and will take excellent care of you.

all that Boe wanted from me was not to gain weight... which was hard with as messed up as my PCOS was back then... I ended up gaining 10 pounds... but about a month before my surgery I started working on getting used to drinking protein shakes... so I just started with breakfast... on days where I wasn't very hungry for lunch I would do one for lunch as well... I lost the 10 pounds plus 3 more...
So maybe if you do something simple like just doing a protein shake for breakfast, cheese stick for a snack, a healthy lunch, another small snack and then a normal dinner you will lose that 7 pounds without trying much... also why not try getting in 64 oz of water as well...
Good luck... btw- I go to church in Royersford... so if you would ever want to get together sometime after church let me know... a MOPS member at the church also went to Barix for surgery... so maybe she would wanna met with ya too...

i was required to lose 5-7 pounds prior to surgery. my surg date is not set yet. last month, about 5 weeks ago, they saw i had only gained the past 5 months...yikes and said i HAVE to lose or else ! so, i really started concentrating on the water, protein shakes (1-2 a day), sugar free diet jello/ or same in teh pudding occasionally, and healthy choice meals. i also ate dinner with the famly probably 4-5 times a week, regular food, just smaller portions than i used to eat. i really started concentrating..i did have some treats 2-3 times in 5 weeks...anyways , i was just praying when i went to the docs that i would have lost something at least ....i lost 13!!!!! i was in total shock ! so...maybe try some of the things i did..? i agree with what the other girls said too...(my doc requires 2 weeks liquid diet prior to surgery also....) and they have a 6 month program prior to surgery.
