Pre-Op Drama...chips, dip & gas! (kind-of long)
Ok, so I've finished my 5 "medically supervised visit" and am in the home stretch. I've had the sleep study (another long story), the clearance from the Psychologist (oh my gosh was he old!) and all the other tests required by the insurance.
I've been really sticking to the diet & exercise and am down about 43 lbs. So, after visit #5, I decided to splurge a little. It was Friday night and my husband was to work late. My daughter and I visited the grocery store after school and we bought the smallest bag of chips we could find and the smallest french onion dip that Giant Eagle sells! I decided that we'd have some with dinner then pitch the rest, so that it would not be left in the house for us to eat the next day. I can remember times in my life when I could easily have eaten the whole bag without blinking! Well, about 1/2 hour after dinner I had the most incredible stomach cramps! It was up high, between my breasts, and I was sure I was dying! (not too dramatic :-))
My sister, a nurse, suggested several treatments including drinking milk, taking several Tums, and finally suggested that I make a trip to the ER if it didn't get better. So, I then had to call my husband at work to come to take me to the hospital & call my mother -in-law (oh joy!) to come to help with my daughter so that she wouldn't have to join us at the hospital. So embarrasing!
Wait - that's not the best of it! I had Part II of my sleep study scheduled for that evening and had to cancel! Ug! We rushed to the hospital. As we're driving in the parking lot, I realized that all the burping I'd been doing (so lovely!) had made the pain go away. Not wanting to go to the ER with nothing wrong, we sat in the parking lot - and I walked around the parking lot for about 15 minutes until I was sure I was alright. Ended up being just gas or indigestion?
So embarrasing! I'm wondering if this is similiar to the gas pains I hear about Post-op? It was incredible!
Needless to say, they'll be no more chips & dip at our house and I'll think twice before indulging in anything so greasy! Funny to think how my stomach could change (without surgery) in 5 months! Now, because of scheduling conflicts, I have to wait for my Sleep Study until 2 days before my 6th "Medically supervised" weigh-in. :-(
Oh well! The drama continues...!
Hope this crazy episode made you smile!

Sorry, I am not being insensitive, but I had to laugh a little at that.
Gas can surely disguise itself as some scary things. And it's always so embarassing to realize all you needed to do was let out a good burp or fart. LOL
Gas pain after surgery immediately is definately like that. It can be very uncomfortable. But it passes. All the other gas post surgery, well I have just gotten acustom to it. I don't personally take any meds. I let nature take it course. But many people use the gas -ex strips that are out now.
Good luck with your journey..........

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!
Pat,
I'm not laughing at you - I'm laughing with you (hopefully you are laughing by everything by now?) I'm glad you are feeling better. I remember pre op having a huge splurge night with chips and what not...and clearly remember waking up starving AND feeling like crap. It was sooo weird.
Sorry you learned the hard way - but glad the lesson was taught!

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.

Thanks, Ladies, for your response!
Yes, I'm laughing at myself and knowing that it was a valuable lesson learned! I just think it's hysterical that my "sneak" involved telling so many people !
Guess it just brings home the fact that the only one we hurt by "cheating" is ourselves!
Glad to say, though, that I'm right back in the saddle! I'm pushing myself at the gym and determined to lose as much as possible before the surgery! Can only make things easier, right?!?
Thanks again for your support! It's good to have someone to share these crazy stories with as we move along the roller coaster of life!
Have a super day!
