Dreaming of Protein

HI Everyone,

I woke up this morning and my first thought was....how am I going to get in my protein today? I am 8 days out and as of yesterday I have started gagging on the protein shakes and just the thought of them makes me sick. What can I do? I planned a "menu" for the day in my head and I am about 20grams shy of my goal for protein.
I am sure I am not the only one who has gagged on the protein shakes, I am looking for some advice as to how to get them down easier. Thanks so much!!

how are you making your protein shakes? And what protein are you using? And what stage are you on...

Are you still on full liquids?

Try mixing them with water instead of milk.  Also, try different protein powders.

You can also stir a little protein powder in things like yogurt on full liquids.

If you used unflavor protein you can mix it into warm broth.  Careful not to over heat the broth, it will curdle the protein powder.  It has to be just barely warm.

Some of my favs:

Coffee flavored protein powder + 1 envelope NSA carnation instant breakfast, chocolate flavor, 1 cup skim plus milk, and ice.  Blend in the blender for a milkshake like consistency.

I've heard some people use vanilla protein powder, orange juice, and ice for a creamscicle like flavor.

And the best advice I received was from Norm...who said I have to understand that this is like medicine and I must take it.  It won't be for the rest of my life, but it is impertive for healing.  You don't have to like it, you have to do it.

Many of us have gagged on protein shakes the trick is to keep experimenting until you find something "tolerable"

Also as far as pre made shakes go, I LOVE (even at 16 mos out) the EAS light in either strawberry or vanilla.  It's high in protein and low in sugar.  Most super markets sell them.  Remember you don't have to drink the whole thing in one sitting of the pre made stuff.  Drink 1/4 or 1/2 a cup as a serving a few times a day.

I am using Soy Vanilla. I had been mixing with milk and carnation instant breakfast. I made it yesterday with water, ice and a few cut up strawberries and then strained it.
I am still in the liquid phase. One more week, and then it is on to pureed which I am guessing will be easier to get the protein in.

Actually could be the milk making you gag more than the protein itself - a lot of people cannot tolerate milk or milk products immediately following surgery and turn to soy milk instead - would that be an option for you? I was fortunate that milk didn't bother me, but trust me, at 8 days out from surgery I was nowhere my protein goal - none of us are. That pouch is way too small and sensitive and most of us have no appetite, unless its head hunger. Just make sure to get your fluids in and as much protein as possible - it'll come in time but I'm sure the doctor knows you won't be getting it all in right now.

Wish you all the best - you'll find something you like...and for me things that were too cold were nasty - my pouch couldn't tolerate real cold drinks at first - that took a while. Its going to take a lot of experimenting but you'll find what works for you.

I used to blend them with ice and have it as a frozen drink.  It made all the difference.
