Time frame
Hi to all on the PA board. I'm new and in the process of getting approved.
I've been to my initial consult at Barix with Dr. Pupkova back on March 6. That was a Friday and I called Monday, March 9 and asked them to please proceed with my approval paperwork.
I was told to get some labs drawn and get tested for Sleep Apnea. I had my labs drawn last Friday. I did not hear back from Dr. Pupkova as to the results. I'm assuming she would contact me if there was anything serious on them. I also had my Sleep consult on Wednesday of this week, so I'm moving right along with her requirements.
I then rec'd an introduction email on the 18th from Barix indicating that they were going to be working with me to receive written approval from Keystone Health Plan East and tha*****pically takes 4-6 weeks. It seemed to read that they were just starting the approval process on that day.
Normally, I wouldn't question this, as I'm aware that pre-approvals can take time, but from reading this board and others, it seems like Keystone Health Plan East has a much better turn around time for approvals than 4-6 weeks. Sometimes even days.....
It's my understanding that I qualify mostly from being 45.9 BMI, plus I have high cholesterol, bone spurs and suspected sleep apnea. I also checked with my employer and bariatric surgery is not an exclusion on our plan.
Should I assume that they are just behind on their paperwork and wait for them to call me? I sincerely do not want to be a pest and bother them, but as you can imagine, I'm anxious to know one way or the other.
Any insight would be appreciated and by all means - If I need to just sit tight, give it to me straight
Thanks to all.
Lisa

Welcome!
I too had my surgery at Barix back in August. I went in for my consult on 6/6/08 had insurance approval on 6/10/08 and all my PATs and other testing (sleep, psych) done over the next 4 weeks. I had my surgery on 8/25/08 (although I could have had it earlier but needed to arrange child care for my kids)
The big part is just getting your insurance approved. After that it's pretty easy (and quick) sailing.
Best of luck.

Lisa,
Welcome to the boards!
I had surgery done at barix, but did not have your insurance. I am also a pupkova patient and she is phenomenal, as is the whole staff of barix!
There is a fine line between sitting tight and bothering them. I would keep copies of everything you have gotten done and sent to them. After a week or two weeks of waiting, I would put in a follow up call to make sure they have received everything they needed.
The 4-6 week thing was probably a generic line in the email to cover all insurance companies and what not.
Good luck!
Pam
