got to pat and was not cleared for surgery because of low white blood count

I am very upset right now because I had my pat's done today. Things seemed to be going well and then the bloodwork came back. I have very low white blood counts which would make it very difficult for me to fight any infection post surgery. I have been to a couple of support groups at the barix clinic in PA and felt at peace with my decision. I met some very nice people and felt very welcome there.

So as of now I am being postponed. I have to see the hemotologist on Monday morning to see where I go from here. I was scheduled for March 31st. Help I need support right now before I call off the whole thing!

Hi Beth, hang in there. I'm sure the hematologist can give you some things to do to get your wbc's up where they need to be.  Just be glad they found it ahead of time and not after you were already in surgery.  They will do whatever they can to be sure you are healthy as you can be before they put you under.  Trust their judgement and know that eventually your time will come.

I'll keep you in my thoughts while you get past this roadblock. 

Don't give up! You came this far in the journey it wil be worth it..This is just a smal speed bump. Let me know if you need anything PM me...

Many of us were not cleared during PATs.  I was one, and another poster I know failed because of a thyroid problem.  It is very discouraging and disappointing, but a low white blood count can be fixed.  Meet with the hemotologist and be religious with whatever regimen he/she puts you on.  Try to stay strong and don't let this little pebble in the sand keep you from getting to your dream.  Be sure to keep us posted.  We are all here for you.

That sux Beth.   Sorry to hear of the postponement but in the big picture it's just a blip.  You have to look at it that way.  Better you don't have a complication.   The hemotologist will fix you right up and you'll get a new date and breeze through to the loser's bench.    See ya then ;-)

 NOOOO!  I was thinking about you today, Beth.  I'm so sorry things didn't go well for you.  I know that dealing with it  probably sucks very hard for you right now, but I think that, in the long run, everything will work out just fine.  YOU CAN DO IT!!! Hang in there and call/email me if you need to talk!

I was thinking about you too. I was going to call, but then I just felt like emailing. Well, now I am thinking of waiting until June to have the surgery. Gee, maybe we could have it at the same time and be roommates?? I am trying to look for the silver lining....I have to get some type of answer about this white blood count issue. I have been seeing a hemotologist for several months and I knew about this issue. I guess I was hoping it wouldn't be a big deal for the surgery. Thanks for being there for me. I go to the dr on mon. morning to see what is next on the horizon. P A T took ALOT longer than I thought it would. I didn't get to eat anything until almost 1pm today, so I was quite irritable from that and then the dr dropping the bombshell was it for me. I have been in a daze every since. Life goes on I guess....Talk to you soon
