Anybody had revision?
Has anyone had revision surgery?
I had RNY almost 2 yrs ago and I've regained a little over 1/2 the weight I lost from the initial surgery.
I have an appointment this morning (leaving shortly for it) to talk about revision.
I've already had tests to see if there was a problem, but it seems there isn't anything specific. X-rays while drinking some nasty liquid and an endoscopy didn't show any problems. I don't have a leak and the pouch has not stretched.
I don't get dumping syndrom, and I can eat pretty much anything, and as much at a sitting, as I could before surgery. The only difference is that I can't eat much of anything too doughy or it just seems to get stuck on the way to my stomach. Other than that, pretty much anything goes. I've I wanted to, I could eat a whole pizza in an hour while watching Gray's Anatomy!
I'm soooo disappointed. Just about everyone else I know that has had WLS tells me 1 slice of pizza, or maybe a few bites of a second, is all they can hold. And most of them get dumping syndrom after more than 1 snack size candy bar, small piece of cake, or anything very 'carby.' I could eat half a bag of snack size candy bars without batting an eye, or suffering any ill effects except the more pounds they would add to my rear or belly.
I have a friend that works where I do who had RNY, even with the same surgeon at the same hospital, about a month before I had mine. She looks FANTASTIC! and has probably lost something like 150 pounds! She's gone from, I think, a size 24 to about a 10! And looks and feels just wonderful. That makes my situation even more frustrating and discouraging!
I'd love to hear about any experiences anyone else has had with revision surgery, or with weight re-gain after WLS, particularly RNY.
I'm off to finish getting ready for my appointment, but I'll check back late this afternoon or this evening.
Ciao for now.

Before you try something as drastic as revision have you tried the 5 day pouch test? Its available on line (the instructions) and I don't think it 'shrinks' your pouch but for a lot of people I know it has gotten them back on track to eating right, not drinking with meals, exercising, etc. Do you think that would help before you put yourself through another surgery?
Sounds like your 'tool' is still intact - you've just gotten used to it and have fallen back into old habits. How about support group meetings? They are also extremely helpful because so many people experience the same things - even what you're going through.
No matter what path you choose I wish you all the best - you have the tool - maybe what you really need is a refresher course in how to use it.

I'm not flaming you. I'm in the same boat and it's a tough paddle to do what I know I have to do to lose my regain but if you go over to the pregnancy board and see all the ladies that have put on 30 or 50lbs w/pregnancies and get it back off it is very encouraging to see it can be done when you work the tool correctly. Not easy. But do-able.

1 choice @ a time > 1 day @ a time. Slow to Succeed is still Success ;-)
I would go back to basics before I would go for a revision... like others have said... this is just a tool... you have to control what you put in it... I'm not flaming you either... this is a hard journey... but you have friends here... you should come to Liz's cooking class... you will get some great recipes and meet some of us in person...
Hang in there...
I know how hard it is knowing that you can eat more and trying not to do it - thank god I am a "super" dumper I don't tolerate any sugar and don't try - I can eat carbs but I am one of those people that can't finish a slice of pizza. I'd be pretty darn scared if I can eat any more then that.
We are all here to support you in whatever you do!
*hugs*
Liz
PS oh and I forgot to add that there is a lady who just got home from a revision and posted here earlier today - she might have some more answers for you if you PM or post to her - hope this helps!
Although I've read some opf the posts here in the past, I am fairly computer illiterate, so this is the first time I had posted. I have enough trouble just finding the group again once I leave it, lol.
Gorgeousha, it sounds like you are doing really well, so I'm betting that your Dec surgery will do the trick for you.
Nicole, I've never heard about the Beck Solution book, but will look for it.
Kathy, I went to support group meetings faithfully for over a year--both leading up to my surgery and after. They helped to an extent, and I have kept in regular touch with some of the folks who were actually the most helpful.
I have also done thee 5 day pouch test.
I know the surgery is just a tool, but as with you, generally a big part of the help of that tool is dumping from sugar and/or carbs, and the discomfort from overeating. I get neither, so although I have the tool, it, in essence, is a broken tool that won't function properly.
Jackie, are you a health care prfessional in the field? Or have you had revision surgery? Are you describing the physical problems you have had from revision to DS, or do you just know several people who have had that type of revision and all have the same common physical problems.?
It seems you have a better diagnosis and more answers for me than the surgeons I've seen in person, even after they have the advantage of seeing the actual condition of my bypass through flouroscopy and endoscopy!
I don't have to search my soul for an answer to why I eat a half bag of candy instead of stopping at 2 because I only said I COULD, not that I DO.
It's interesting too, that you have concluded that since everything from the surgery is intact, that it can only be a psycological problem that requires therapy for my carb-craving-addictive personality, and yet neither of the surgeons I have seen---face to face---nor the physician's assistant that I see regulary (on a monthly basis for 6 months or so) and have known for almost 3 years have reached that conclusion! Although your input was certainly interesting, I think I will continue to see the professional folks at the hospital for their input also.
Shannon & Liz, thanks so much for your comments.
Where would I find this cooking class? Is it on this board, or are you talking about a 'real life' class?
Although I must admit, I am far from a gourmet cook. Simple & easy is my cooking style! And I could eat baked chicken for at least half my meals in any given week, and salad for most of the rest. I'm a real fussy eater and I stick to 'plain' foods--no exotics spices or exotic ingedients for me. About as 'exotic' as I get is garlic, lol.
I'd also be interested in reading any posts by the person you were talking about that just had revision. Where would I find her posts?
Thanks again, ladies.
