Couple of Wow moments for me

Okay so I am almost 15 months out and as I mentioned at the last Barix Saturday meeting compliments are now getting fewer and fewer. So I had my 5 year old daughter's annual Parent/Child family night last night. One of the mom's that I have not seen since last June was there and she recognized my daughter but had this puzzled look on her face like she did not recognize me. I started to ask her if she remembered me and she said she honestly thought that I was my daughter's aunt or babysitter. LMAO.

I did not take it personally but then her teacher who I have not seen since September had the same reaction and told me since I started working for Nutrisystem that might be the reason I am looking so svelte. LOL. I just smiled and thanked them both but I was wondering should I have said something about my WLS?? I just don't feel like everybody should know about my surgery but just thought I share this with my OH family.

People comment on my over 100 pound weight loss and attribute it to my WILLpower, but it is my WANTpower: I WANT to be thin and healthy more than anything else!

Great Wows!! They do get few and far between once your weight stabilizes but that just makes the ones you do get more special!!!

No need to tell them about the WLS - just the fact that they notice you have lost weight is enough! Doesn't matter how you did it!

That is a super Wow moment...To not be recognized is the best...Waiting for that day...I share my surgery with ANYONE...I do not openly volunteer things but if I say something like no thank you I cannot eat this and people ask why I tell them...I guess it is a personal perference...I hope that I never regret being so open but that is just how I am in general.

How fantastic for you. Great wow moment. As far as telling people about your surgery I think that is a personal choice, especially when it comes to people like your child's teacher. These people are not "close" friends or family so maybe they don't have a "need to know". I know myself I will probably be telling everyone, cause I am just like that. My son and I are both Bipolar which is something that alot of people wouldn't talk about, but I feel the more open I am about this illness and the journey to get well and find the right medicines, the more I can educate those that I talk to. Whatever you decide it is your choice. Cherish every wow moment cause you deserve them, you have put in a lot of hard work to get to where you are.

Great wows, Shilpa!

Nope, don't feel like you have to tell anyone about the wls....no ones business.

That is a great WOW Shilpa.  I am waiting for that day when people don't recognize me.  I know it will happen because I have NEVER NEVER NEVER been thin.  So when I get there, it will be very strange.    It is your choice to not share your WLS with them.  I, like pieparty though, am a blabbermouth.  I can't keep my mouth shut.  It has already opened doors for friends of mine who have thought about it, but didn't know anyone well enough to ask questions.   I just referred an old friend from high school and her husband to my surgeon.  Hopefully things will work out for them, as well.  When I am fit enough to climb, I am going to shout it from the rooftops!! LOL!!

To me it depends on the person and how well I feel around them to tell them. Some people I just smile and say thank you to. That I am sure made you day.  You do look awesome! Keep up the good work.

Hey Shilpa

I just thought of something.  Nutrisystem should give you a big raise because people that you meet will think it is from that. lol

As far as telling people that is totally your decision.  I tell the world but that's just me.

Arlene,
You know what?? I am going to speak to my boss who BTW knows about my WLS since I started to shamelessly eat at my desk. LOL. I just never know what to tell people when they compliment me like that .

That's AWESOME Shilpa!

I don't think with conversations such as that you need to tell them.  Not that you are hiding anything...but it can be inducive to a very long conversation and sometimes you just don't have the time or the need to share it.  Now - if they specifically ask you how you did it - that's totally up to you.  I answer most people who are on a "friendly" basis with me (IE not super duper close) with the gastric bypass, exercise, and rules answer.  However, I have chosen not to tell any of my extended family - even this far out - and when I see them and they ask me how I do it I omit the WLS portion and say "I pay very close attention to what goes in my mouth and what doesn't and how much exercise I get"  That's not a lie.

No need to tell everyone - all depends on the situation and your feelings.

Cheers to not being recognized!

Pam
