I have always stayed below 5 grams of sugar in food when I eat it.....what and where is it written how many grams of sugar we should have or should I say don't have over that amount?  This works for me but I have heard other people say different.   also a few weeks ago I ate too many artificial sugar in food and man did I dump, twelve hours worth......first time in two years.....just wondering what everyone thinks or was taught pre surgery at their classes....thank you.....

I'm a little over a year out and I still stay below 2 grams of sugar in anything - I know I dump so I don't test the waters. Some people can eat more - and I think there's a 'rule' or something that if isn't one of the first 5 ingredients in a food product it may not be as bad - somebody else probably knows that better. I'd say if staying below 5 grams works for you then stay there.

I don't know that there is a specific rule about it. Everyone is different. Some people don't even dump at all with sugar. Some can tolerate much more than others.

Me? It depends on the type of sugar and in what combination of other things. I can eat half a hershey bar and not have one side effect. If I have one tiny bite of a brownie...........I have to run to the toilet immediately. It's wierd.

natural sugars get to me too. Grapes........forget it. It's like eating a cup full of sugar as far as I am concerned. It makes me SO sick.

So I think alot of it is trial and error. As I am 4 and a half years post-op. I know which fruits I can eat, what sugar item I can tolerate if I want to indulge....and that brownies (my favorite sweet treat) will never be my friend again!

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!

Yup - everyone is different.

My surgeon teaches no more than 2gm of ADDED sugar in a serving size.  That bring to point Kathy's comment on the first five ingredients.  For example - Dannon Lite and Fit has something like 11gm of sugar per serving.  However...it is from the milk and contains no sugar (made with splenda)  Therefore, i can have it.  The idea is that if sugar, honey, molasses, corn syrup etc is in the first five ingredients AND the sugar gms are over 2 then you run the risk of having a problem, and is stuff they don't want you eating anyway.

Do I go over that?  There are definately times.  I almost always know at this point what I can "get away with" and what I can't - which is not necessarily a good thing.
