Question for 1 Year + Post-ops
Hi - just reading my Barix newsletter and in it says that after the first year protein goals for women are adjusted downward to 45-55 grams/day and 60-70 for men. I just had my one year post-op in Feb and neither Dr Boe or the nut mentioned anything about adjusting my proteins downward (my current goal is 73 grams/day).
I've been doing very well so far - feeling great - bloodwork has been awesome - maybe that's why they didn't change it? But since I won't see them now until next year I'm not certain if I should wait that long to talk to someone about it.
So you guys who are 1 year + out - were your goals adjusted downward by the nuts or the surgeon? I'm a bit confused...
Thanks - Kathy

Kathy,
I was told by the Nut at Barix at my yearly checkup that since I only had about 10lbs to reach my goal and was averaging 2-3lbs weight loss a month Dr P might adjust my protein goal from 70 grams a day to maybe 50 but when I approached this topic with her she told me that she wants me to be at 70 grams and infact keep going at that until she says so since I am working out and need to keep up my calorie intake. I am sorry that is the only explanation I can offer you and I am about 13 month out from my surgery date. I hope this helps.

Barix never said anything to me about adjusting my protein goal and I'll be a 4 yr post op this August. My goal is the same as yours, 73 grams, however I do remember early on, one of the Nut's saying if I couldn't get it all in that a minimum of 50 grams is ok. I say, don't fret, and by all means, don't wait another year. Just call one of the Nut's and see what they recommend. They're always on hand there, or if not, leave a message and one will call you back. Good luck.
My protein was dropped down to about 50gm a day - I was told that I was dropped down due to me being at goal. They also said, though, because I exercise I could get my 70ish gms in a day if I wanted to - but asked me not to go over 80gm in a day at this point (when I'm up for 24+ hours I can easily get in 100+ gm without even trying)
I'd say considering you are still losing weight, stay where you are. Can't hurt to ask the nuts, though.

Hi Kathy,
My original protein goal was the same as yours (73 grams/day). After 1 year, Dr. Pupkova said I could drop down to getting 50-65 grams/day. From the other responses, it sounds like it may be different for everyone so I don't think it would hurt to put in a call to one of the NUTS or to Dr. Boe and ask what they would like you to do.
Hope this helps a bit,
Lisa :)
