confused on multi-vitamins

Hi all, I've seen a few threads here where people mention that chewable multivitamins are absorbed better by us.  I was never told this by my Dr. (I don't think), so I've just been taking regular Centrum because I can swallow them with no problems.  Just curious if I'd get more benefit from chewables, what do ya'll think??  Thanks for the opinions in advance :)

I take the centrum too. The only this I take that is not a solid pill is B-12. I have a sub-lingual one I take, plus injections.

I was told as long as I can tolerate the size of the pill, I am fine. Maybe some others have other opinions though.

I believe my surgeon after a certain point says we can take regular vitamins, by choice I have chosen to stick with the chewables with the thought that it is probably more fully absorbed that way, but that is my choice and opinion.  I would say if your bloodwork comes back consistently ok, then do what you're doing and don't worry about it.  The b-12 must be sublingual though.

Take care, Laureen

Hi Jill!

Long time no speak!  Dr. P also told me (and I think we've talked about this before perhaps?) that I can swallow whole pills and I have not taken chewables since I was about 6 weeks post op.  I have never had any problems swallowing pills after that point (multivitamin, calcium, etc) but don't forget, the B-12 should still be sublingual.  And we should never be taking pills (e.g. medications) that are extended release form because those are definitely not absorbed as effectively by our bodies.  Continue to get your blood work done and if your levels are all within acceptable ranges, and you are comfortable swallowing whole pills, I don't believe there is any disadvantage to doing so.  You can always confirm this again with Dr. P just to be safe though :)

Hope you're doing well,
Lisa :)

Hi,

I use chewables that are made for us at http://www.bariatricshop.com.  It has every thing you need.  Tastes good too!

I take the regular ones now, but post-op I took a liquid form I got at GNC that they claimed was absorbed better because it was liquid.  Problem was that it never mixed well, it was gloppy whenever I tried to mix it.  It was a powder I mixed with water.  I would still take it if not for that lack of consistency.

I need to get up to Barix and get more sublinguanl B12 because my shots don't get me through the 3 week period and I am too crazy busy to go every two weeks.

Hope this helps.

Trish

Thanks everyone, good advice as always.  I was just concerned because I see so much talk of chewables and now the appointments are only once a year so if there were a problem with the blood work I wouldn't find out for a while.  But so far so good, so I guess if it's not broken I won't fix it.

Trish... I get the B12 at Walgreens and I know Trader Joe's sells real nice small sublingual B12 in case Barix isn't convenient for you to get to.
