Surgery March 3, Some questions for you?
Hi everyone,
Well my day is almost here!! I know that everyones tastes are different, and that this question is asked alot but would everyone share with me the protien powders and drinks that work best for you. I would like a good quality protien. Also what is the best unflavored to mix in food. Do they clump in foods? Also anything else that you would suggest to make surgery go nice and smooth. Such as things to take to the hospital, or things that are a must have at home. I have things already, but want to make sure I am as prepared as possible.
Thanks for your help!!

Protein powders are such an individual thing - I like the Matrix Vanilla and Matrix Chocolate and I actually mix them half and half with 1% milk for a mocha type of shake. I also use the unflavored AnyWhey - sometimes with milk, sometimes with juice - you can add the unsweetened syrups to them for different flavors. It would be difficult for you to try them now and like them, because chances are after surgery you won't - its amazing how much our tastes change.
Also, immediate following surgery you're going to be lucky to get your water in and broth, things like that - you honestly won't have an appetite for a long time, but you will begin to get more proteins in as time progresses.
All that being said the biggest thing you can probably have on hand is a Magic Bullet blender - they work fantastic with protein shakes - really mix them up well so there's no clumping. I have never put protein powder in anything like pudding but I know a lot of people do.
As for the hospital take comfortable slippers to walk in and a robe - I don't know what they have at Lancaster - I know Barix had huge robes and all to cover all our parts!!
You're going to do great - next week is the big day!! And maybe a comfy recliner at home or something you can sleep in sort of sitting up for a few days, because I found it very difficult to lay flat following surgery.
Hope this helps. Kathy

I am happy for you.
I used Unjury unflavored
the only thing I could tolerate was SF instant Carnation breakfast
mixed with Skim miljk and unflavored protein powder.
Make sure you ask the staff what you need to bring they know the best.
Things are different there than at Barix I am sure.
U definately plan on visiting and checking on you so make sure I know all the info

I use the Unjury chocolate and unflavored. It's a good medicinal protein that mixes well and tastes pretty good. I used it before surgery and it tasted the same to me after surgery. But everyone is different, so I wouldn't advise ordering a lot up front. You can only order it online at www.unjury.com. They are a small company and they ship your order quickly....I usually get it three or four days after I order.
For the hospital, the one thing I was very happy to have was sneakers. You will be walking a lot and really need good support....slippers were not enough for me. I brought books and magazines, which I never touched....just too tired most of the time.
At home, a recliner like Kathy suggested was a godsend. I slept on it for a while until I felt comfortable getting in and out of bed. You won't be eating much for a while....mostly liquids. Don't get too upset if you can't get your protein requirement in at the start. That is next to impossible. It's much more important to get as much fluids as possible in and to be sure to walk as much as possible and to continue to do your breathing exercises.
Best of luck, and be sure to keep us posted on how you are doing.

A few things you might want to consider for the hospital
your own pillow (if this is OK)
I-pod & charger
cell phone & charger
chap stick
pads - surgery can bring on your period and the ones most hospitals have are like the phone book for manhattan...
comfy clothes - I wore the same ones in and home
maybe a bathrobe
shoes that slip on very easily - you won't be doing much bending over to tie them!
Thats really it - they will give you most of the stuff that you need.
Best of luck next week! You are in the BEST of hands!

Well, first I want to say congratulations and much luck to you on your upcoming surgery. I noticed that your surgeon is Dr. Brader, and let me add that you are in the best of hands.
I've never been a big water drinker, so I preferred to sip Wylers Light. They have the best SF fruit punch I've ever tasted, without the after taste that to me, Crystal Light leaves. As far as protein powders go, I have always used, and still use Designer Whey from GNC. I've used their chocolate, french vanilla, and natural flavors (natural is the one you'd add to food) and all tasted pretty good. Designer whey does have a tendency to clump if the food is entirely too hot, but at a just right temp, it's just fine.
At the hospital, you will definitely want your cell phone and charger. Your ipod for your regular walks during the night, some magazines or a book, and I brought my portable DVD player. I also had my own pillow, my own slippers, and my own PJ's.
At home, you may want to have Peppermint Tea on hand. This will help you pass some of that gas that they inflate you with during your surgery. Don't worry though, walking regularly, drinking the tea, and lying down a little flatter in your own bed will help all that gas pass smoothly.
I hope this was helpful to you. Again, good luck and don't forget to keep us posted on your progress once you feel up to it.

I lived alone at the time, so prepared my apartment with the idea that I would be weak and in pain before going to the hospital. It paid off. I got loads of tiny containers from the dollar store and filled them with soups. I'd gotten some of my favorite soups (split pea, veggie, etc, no rice or pasta) and run them through the blender till smooth. I had pillows propped up on the couch and a little table beside that with anything I might need. I borrowed a walker and used that to get up and down. Had blankets on the couch, lots of comfy clothes clean and handy.
All the best to you for your surgery and recovery!
