Anyone had problems with LOW Vit-D ??  In my pre op testing they found very low VItamin D and very high parathyroid hormone..but my calcium is normal.  I spoke with my surgeon's PA yesterday and they are prescribing me VIt D.  She tells me that low vit D could cause the elevated parathyroid hormone, but they will be following this pre and post op.  If things dont stabalize with the surgery and the vit d supplements, then they will recommend my seeing an endocrinologist.

anyone have any experience with this.  she told me not to freak out at this point but its tough

I don't have any problems with vitamin D but I Do have thyroid issues - they are nothing to worry about - it is regulated with meds - if it turns out that is what it is let me know and feel free to ask any questions! I have hypothyroidism and cysts in my thyroid - 1/2 of it was removed in June 2002. About 1-1/2 ago I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease too (a hardening of the remaing part of my thyroid)

Good luck with everything!

Thanks Liz
my thyroid functions are totally normal,  its my Parathyroid that is wacked.  they tell me not to be alarmed.  Endocrinology was not one of my best subjects in school....i get the basics but get all confused with the hormone loops.

i'll get my rx for the vit d filled like a good girl and do what they tell me

lol that's always the best bet! I know that the parathyroids (I had to have 2 of mine moved so they monitor my levels to make sure all is good) regulate the calcium and vit D in your bloodstream somehow. WHen I had the left 1/2 and center of my thyroid removed (Cysts that kept filling up after aspiration - wouldn't wish that one ANYONE) they had to preserve the parathyroids and put them somewhere in the tissue in my neck.

I don't think that it is anything to worry about either! Just take the vits and keep getting your bloodwork done and all will be good!

I have a low Vit D post op, and my surgeon has me taking 50,000 units of Vit D once a week for 6 weeks.  Then repeat bloodwork for my 6 mo. appt.  I don't think it's a big deal, esp. if your calcium is normal.  Now if your calcium was high also, then I think there would be cause for alarm, but seeing an endocrinologist wouldn't be a bad idea.. good luck.

I had low Vitamin D post op and I had to take 50,000 iu every day for two weeks.
It has been fine since then - that was about 9 months ago.
Don't freak out about it.  Take the prescription and get your blood retested - it
will probably be fine then.
