newbie question

Hi, hope some one can help.  I just had my bypass sugery on Friday the 6th.  Saturday while in the hospital I started having extreme pains, running fever and heart rate racing.  They did blood work and I had to go for a cat scan.  Everything came back ok no blockages or leakages.  I still have the problem with gas pains.  I get up and try to move every hr, I can feel my stomach rumbling and gurgling, but I still can't pass it.  I had 2 small bowel movement yesterday but thats it.  I think I can handle the actual incision pains if I didn't have the gas pains to go with it.  Also, I don't know if it is the meds I am on or what, but I can't stand how everything tastes when I eat it.  Jello tastes funny to me, I can't even drink a half a cup of decaf tea without it tasting funny.  Any advice that anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Everything you've described sounds pretty normal to me!  I had rumbling in my tummy for days!!  It took me a few days to pass gas!  Gas pain was the worst!  The nurses kept telling me to keep moving!  The more you walk and more the more it pushes the gas through!!

I don't know what it is that makes things taste differently.  I know when we go through Ketosis, it give you a metallic taste in your mouth.  A lot of people say how their tastes change!  Mine changed a little bit, not a whole lot.  Peppermint tea was already mentioned, but I've heard that is suppose to help.  This too shall pass!

Hope some of this helps, right now you want to sip & walk, sip & walk!!!  Good luck!

There are never any problems, only solutions.  quoted by a dear and special friend!!!

You're really not going through anything abnormal right now - the gas pains are from the surgery - you have to move to get them out of your body - its very painful, I know, but keep walking and moving as much as possible and they will pass and you'll be feeling much better.

Amazing how different things taste post-surgery - I was always a huge ice-water drinker - the colder the better - after surgery I couldn't stand it. Had to sip luke warm water for the first month or so until I could tolerate the cold water again, now its back to normal. A lot of people offered good advice to me pre-surgery - don't load up on things you love before surgery because chances are afterwards you won't like them at all, and man were they right! But a lot of things I used to like (sf jello, etc) have come back and its fine now - just took some time.

Sounds like you're doing okay - anything outside of the gas pains should be reported to your surgeon, but otherwise walk, walk, walk and sip, sip, sip - both things will help immensely.

Keep us posted - best of luck to you!

Kathy

Thanks to those of you *****plied.  The gas pains a starting to subside and I actually am starting to feel a little better.  Will keep you posted.  My sister-in-law and I had it done together so we talk to each other several times a day to check up on each other.
