Bite size?

5 wks out from surgery and my DH and I had this discussion at dinner about the size of bites I take. He thinks I should switch to a child's fork. I use a regular fork but only use 1/4 or 1/3 with food. I chew my food to mush before swallowing. Is he right? Are my bites too big? I've had no reaction to my eating afterward and I measure all my food prior to eating. I'm still onsoft fooods and will start introducing other fooods this week. Can somebody help me--what is too big?

I had my surgery November 5th and I find there are times I still eat too fast.  I use a baby fork and spoon and I noticed it makes a big difference.  Less gets caught... I takes longer to eat and I have less stomache upset.   When I told my surgeon's assistant I was using baby utensils (that was recomended to me on this board) he thought it was a great idea. I dont always use them but I pull them out at dinner time or when I feel extra hungry and there is a chance I might turn into a piggy.

Give it a shot.

Susie - YOu certainly don't have to. I never did and I am out 2+ years and 135 pounds. Just take small bites - no more then 1/2 the fork at a time - your belly will let you know if you are overdoing it that's for sure! SOme do find that it helps to re-train the brain though. AS long as you are chewing very well you'll be fine.
Best of luck!

Lots of people reccommend using baby utensils....but it sounds like you are doing fine without them.  If you notice you start to eat to quick at certain times, then you can give them a shot but otherwise I would stick with what you are doing.

Keep up the great work!

You don't need one if you can do what you are doing.
I am 20 months out and I still eat with a baby spoon & fork because even after all this time if Iuse regular utensils I put to much in my mouth at  one time.
it  is just the bigger the bite the longer you have to chew tha bite, the smaller the bite the lesss  you have to chew. Whatever works for you is the right size

I never used a baby sppon or fork in the beginning. I was very concious of how much I put in my mouth. But now, over 4 years later, there are times I get them out. As time goes on, I tend to "forget" sometimes that I can't/shouldn't take regular sized bites. So once in awhile I get them out to get me back on track to remember amounts.

So it's up to you. I do it as a "reality check" for myself.

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!
