anyone want to pouch test w/ me
Pam I wasn't dogging on Steve I was just making a statement about myself because I felt that cakes and cookies were my weakness, I think Steve's heart is in the right place. Just out of curiousity how long should we be out of surgery to do the pouch test? I'm sorry if my statement offended you it wasn't intended to offend anyone. Sorry. Its just that me personally always had a crazy food fanasty of sitting there with a b-day cake all to myself with a fork but never followed up on it. Anyway happy b-day Steve.
You didn't offend me....just stating my opinion :)
As far as "how far out" that's up to debate. I don't believe in doing the pouch test at ANY time if the sole intention is to "jump start weight loss" or "jump start through a stall" as some say it can be used for. I personally don't believe in this because I believe it is part of that old dieting yo yo game so many of us played before surgery. I believe that our life style is what it is now and that the surgery tool is there.
That being said, I understand it is easy for us to get off track at some point or another of our "life style" We are all, after all, human, and consciously or subconsciously choose to make poor choices.
The pouch test, for me, is a way to re set my way of thinking and to make sure I am following all the rules I am supposed to be following. As norm said, you shouldn't need a pouch test to do this. And to some degree he is right....kind of like Liz's idea of "back to basics" type stuff. Sometimes, however, I need a concrete plan like a pouch test to get me to follow those rules.
So really - do I have an answer for how long out you "should" be? No. I don't think anyone does.
The pouch test basically brings you through all of the post op stages in 5 days. Liquids to solids. Now...I also do not agree with nor follow all of the rules. They state you should only eat for 15 minutes. BS to that. Your body takes at least 15 minutes to say I'm full, if not 20 minutes. And Barix teaches that you should eat at a comfortable pace, taking your time to enjoy your food, and be able to "know" when you are full. So, if I do choose to do the pouch test, then I choose to do it in my normal 20-30 minute meal time frames.
I also choose to encorporate fruits and veggies in my meal plan because I believe that is a healthier way. I don't do it on the full liquid stage...but towards days four and five, I think that is fair game. I do cut out the refined carbs, however, completely. I get my carbs from dairy, fruits, veggies when doing the program.

It definitely a head thing for me. In the lunch room, is also our sample room. today was:
1. 5 lbs of Muenster Cheese
2. 3 lbs of Seafood Salad
3. 1 deli Smoked Turkey
4. Some WIC approved american Cheese
5. and several taste tests of Meatballs.
6. 6 lbs of Cooked Salami
In my fluffier days, I often didn't pack lunch, since there was always plenty to eat...
Now, I go in to get my water, and to eat my Greek Yogurt for lunch....
and then I look....and keep going....
then the next trip I note how gross seafood salad is (note, I sell the stuff) , and then it's maybe just a piece of smoked turkey...it's lean protein....and then next time is, oh, 2 slices of american cheese is 40 cal, and only 2.5 g fat.....that would be great w/ my turkey....
Or, is my reaction normal....? Or will it worsen....I've eaten slices of pepperoni, and stuff like that.
On friday it was chicken salad.....and I pulled out a chunk or two of chicken.....and tried to minimize the mayo......
I am supposed to eat 6x a day, and that's pretty much 4x at work.....
I do appreciate the feedback. I just think it's tough to fight my food addiction, while having samples around, and talking to people all day about what food, I will be buying for the company, or telling a customer how they want my food. Then I can buy it at work...and the fillet mignon is great....but it's just an all day conversation.....then what are we feeding the kids, and what about us?
Is my life, due to my career, more focused on food, or is it my mentality....I can see the naughty nurses having trouble saying "Well, it's time for Room 12's lunch, and the old man in room three needed the low sodium lunch" etc. I guess Pam will let me know......and please don't ruin the Naughty Nurse thing for me....there is always hoping....

It's mostly your food addiction. And a little of temptation.
Not only do we need to figure out who needs to eat what...but then we need to go in and figure how much of what they ate for calorie counts and what not.
Then take into consideration the drug reps...who want to "sell" their drugs to the physicians to prescribe to their patients....so they do that by sending in boat loads of cookies, candies, pizza's, sandwhiches...whatever.
And then there our supervisors who, on a hard night, "reward" our best efforts with a pizza party. And the many nurses who bring in the extra holiday goodies...kids candy....hubby's bday cake...whatever...so "they don't eat it" and put it in the break room - where we all go to go get our food from the fridge.
And when you are running around like a chicken without a head....a handful of pretzels or one or two hershey kisses is a heck of a lot quicker, easier, and much more emotionally satisfying than a greek yogurt or a turkey roll up.
And people in just about every aspect of life will probably relate to being "surrounded" by food at all times.
And really - the short most difficult answer to hear is the true answer: Pack your meals and don't pick up the first slice of turkey.
Easy? No? Realistic? Sometimes.
Pam
