Nothing taste good

Hey everyone,
I am having a lot of trouble eating.  Nothing taste good and I am having a hard time eating.  Food just seems to be turning my stomach.  I go for my 1 month post op next Thursday.  I am also having a hard time drinking these days as well.  Any suggestions? Can the surgery affect your taste buds? I had gastric bypass on 12/22.

Thanks
Loree

Ah, the changing taste buds.  Sooooo common after surgery.  That's why people say not to stock up on anything - food drink pudding jello, ANYTHING before surgery cause after surgery you might not be able to "stomach" it (pun intended, as bad as it might be)

Concentrate on fluids - they are soooo important - and protein.  You made need to continue protein shakes (if using) to meet both of these goals.

As far as getting fluids in - take a medicine cup labeled with "30 ml" on it (normally comes with liquid meds such as nyquil, or I would think you could buy them in a pharmacy/drug store)  If you take one of those every 15 minutes of fluid, assuming you sleep for 8 hours a day - it would add up to your 64 ounces of fluid.  Also - experiment with different types of bottles/glasses.  I found that a water bottle worked best for me and I could drink more.  If I drank out of a regular glass I felt like I was getting to much at once, and if I used anything smaller - I felt like I was ingesting air.  I had to physically keep the fluid IN MY HAND most of the time to get me to sip.  The minute I put it down, even in front of me, I wouldn't drink it.

It does get easier - and then you WILL want to eat again - and that is a whole other game of frustration.

Slow and steady - this is one heck of a roller coaster ride and is worth every second of it!

Good luck on your journey and your post op appointment!  Keep us updated!

Pam

I had that issue too but not so soon after surgery...

What have you tried and not liked... food and drink wise... we might be able to come up with some other ideas... hang in there...

I have tried soup...the only soup I can tolerate is tomato.  Tuna salad and chicken salad both leave a burning sensation in my throat. Chicken no matter how long I chew feels like it gets stuck, fish is the same way. I can not even look at broth anymore. The only thing that is good is Ritz and I only eat a few. I am still taking my diabetes meds so I have to eat something. Popcicles are ok, they are hit or miss.  Sugar free jello is also hit or miss.  I am very worried about my protein intake because I just can not drink but half a shake a day.  What could happen if I do not get enough protein? I am open to any suggestions!

well Tomato soup was a no no list from my doctor because it is high in sugar...

What about eggs? pudding? Cheese? what other soups besides tomato have you tried? What about french toast made with splenda and sugar free syurp?

Which brands of popcicles and what flavors?

Have you tried protein shakes?

I know when I was about a month out I couldn't handle tuna or chicken for chicken salad... I ate a lot of soup-chunky- through the blender... such as potato, ravioli, chunky chicken noodle... things that would be nasty looking blended lol...

Try this if you like cheesecake... 1 block of fat free cream cheese, 1 package of lemon instant sugar free pudding, 2 cups of milk- toss all of that in the blender and blend until smooth... this early out only eat a few teaspoons at a time... sometimes I add vanilla protein powder to this mix as well... this mix is also good with vanilla, strawberry, banana, and chocolate pudding... 1 TBSP of cream cheese is 7 grams of protein... so it is my cheap version of protein pudding hehehe...

Eggs have been hit and miss, but cheese is real good.  I have not tried to eat bread yet.  Protein shakes are just not good right now, but I am slowly starting to do ok with milk. I made some pepperoni pizza soup and that went real well even with the noodles in it.  I am thinking of chili because the beans are high in protein.

By the way I made the cheescake...I used sugar free cheesecake pudding mix and OMG it is good.  I just picked up the regular cream cheese instead of fat free so I will not be eating all the much of it, but wow is it good!

I went on a bariatric site and they have some like shots of orange/grape/fruitpunch and blueberry protein drinks and I was wondering if anyone has tried them? They have like 45g of protein.

I think you are referring to the new whey protein bullets.  Many have used them, myself included.

To be brutally honest - I hated the taste of them.  Good news, though - they are only 3 ounces.  Sooooo, it's basically 3 or 4 swigs of it and you are done.  I viewed it as "medicine" that HAD to be taken until I could get my protein in from food.  I knew it wouldn't be forever and I knew I needed the protein.

Hang in there - it does get better!

Oh - and try this (it sounds really weird, but trust me, it's fabulous)  Take part skim ricotta cheese, add a little bit of splenda to it and a little bit of cinnamon to it and mix it up.  It tastes like rice pudding!!  Start with 1/4 of a cup and see how you do.  1/4 cup generally has between 7-10gm of protein depending on the brand.

You can make protein shakes without the milk... my MIL uses water or lacate free type milk... a lot of people after surgery have a hard time with milk and eggs...

some days I can eat a whole egg... other days I can only take a bite or two...

There is also this recipe... cut and paste because i'm too lazy to do the html stuff... shelly has lots of great recipes when you get out farther... but these pancakes where always easy on my tummy... she has all kinds or protein pancakes and and protein ice cream...

glad you like the cheesecake stuff... I was eating it this morning... sometimes i add fruit to it... yummy banana cheesecake... strawberry cheesecake... etc...

Try making your protein shakes with soy milk or water - you may be developing a lactose intolerance, many of us do post op. You can also try fish of any kind, keep it moist with a bit of broth or lemon juice.
