Beefcake Friday - Vegas Anyone??
Ok - gang - I'll get this started....I'm finally back home from a pretty stressful week in snowey, cold, frigid Madison - but I didnt let any of that hold me back from working out. This morning, I ran 6 miles and then did an hour of core (abs, back, arms).
But here is my real news....I have registered for 2 half marathons this year and will register for the big shabang marathon in Las Vegas which is set to take place Sunday 12/6/09. The first 1/2 is in Madison, WI in early May and the second 1/2 is the rock and roll half marathon in Chicago on August 2nd. (there are live bands every mile - so how kewl will that be?!?!?). By finishing the full marathon in Vegas will qualify me for the Boston marathon in 2010. The Philly Marathon is the Sunday before Thanksgiving and I will be in Wales that week with my kids. Im really bummed that I wont be in the states for that race.
This morning I just returned from the orthopedic surgeon to get his blessing. He is my age and has done 9 full marathons and a bunch of 1/2s. My right knee is bone on bone and after a new set of pics this morning - he said it isnt any wonder I can walk - let alone run - but Im running every day. He gave me the blessing (with a lecture of course) saying that movement is better than just sitting around and that building muscle and stregnth and of course loosing 175 pounds of constant weight on the joint are all good things. My gage will be the two half marathons. If I get through those I will be fine for the full in December.
This week I ran two full 10 mile runs while in Madison (on Monday and Wednesday). My baseline time for 10 miles is 1:45:00 - so I can only get better from here. I am putting off any plastics until 2010 so I can concentrate solely on the training for these races.
I am hoping to get some support from my PA / NJ OH family on this and hope to recruit some of you along for the run. The full marathon is on 12/6 and is also a 1/2 marathon and a walk. I think it would be so much fun for a bunch of us to get together - head out to vegas for a 3 or 4 day weekend (say leave Thursday 12/3 and return Monday 12/7). Imagine the fun we would have - and then some or all of us could do something the day of the race -(either run the the whole thing or 1/2 or walk or whatever). It would be the PA/NJ OH contingent taking Las Vegas by storm......
Think about this - if anyone is interested - PM me and I will start to put together a list. With a group I can then work us a special deal on price reduction rather than everyone paying more than we have to for the trip.
Happy Friday!!

Kim, you are absolutely AMAZING. I am so proud of you. You are what "working it" is all about. It makes me a little embarrassed....I don't have near as much fortitude as you, but I am so happy for your success and will be your cheerleader in spirit since I'm sure I won't be able to join you in Vegas.
