Here we go Steelers...here we go!
Welcome to the PA boards, first of all - great place to hang out! Every hospital and doctor is different - for me I attended a seminar at Barix and the surgeon who gave the seminar was the one I had for surgery. After the group meeting I met with him privately and set the wheels in motion. For me I had to go through some insurance requirements in order for my health care to pay and that took a while, plus all of the tests I had to go thru as well - a cardio eval, psych eval, sleep test, plus the regular mammo and physical stuff. Then I had to do a 3 month diet and exercise program with a registered dietician and a fitness trainer - it sounds like a lot but trust me it was all worth it. I lost 33 lbs just by watching what I ate (and trust me, I ate a lot) and working out, plus it got me in the mode of tracking my food and exercising. I started my journey in June of 07 and had my surgery in Feb 08.
Best of luck to you - don't get discouraged and don't give up - you'll get there.

Welcome!
At the seminar you'll get a packet depending on your insurance. You'll fill out a questionaire about your health history and turn it in. Either they will call you to set up an appointment for your first visit with the surgeon's or get a letter to call and set up an appointment. At that appointment you'll discuss the type of surgery, have a brief exam, learn about the program and meet with the dietician. You'll be scheduled for your next Nut meeting.
I went through St. Margaret's and had a very good experience.
Good Luck to you and GO Steelers!

Hi Alisa,
I can't tell you specifics about UPMC but just wanted to welcome you to OH (as a member!) and to the PA board! The folks here are wonderful and feel free to ask any questions you may have.
Hope your seminar went well on the 6th and I'm looking forward to getting to know you better!
