1mo po today-numbness issue

Today is my 1 mo po from open RNY.  I am so grateful to have made it through the surgery and so far with no major problems.

I have been having trouble getting all the protein/fluid in.  I would say most days I am on the short side of the minimums.  I just keep trying to do better each day.  I have been progressed to stage 3-meats only-no veggies, fruits or starches yet.  I am doing ok on some meats but have been feeling full real quick.  The same with eggs-it only takes a few bites and I'm done. I have been trying hard to eat the protein so I don't have to drink it.

I  can't seem to handle the protein shakes anymore.  The mere thought of one makes me want to gag. As a result, I am lacking in protein and fluids.

My question is has anyone experienced a numbness in the arms and hands--like the feeling when your arm is going to sleep?  It had started like 2 days ago.  I thought I may have slept wrong on them (sleeping in a recliner). Is this from a vitamin deficiency like low potassium, calcium or iron? or from lack of protein?

How long can I go without reaching the minimum amounts before I cause myself other problems?

Thanks for your help,
Kelly

Kelly,

Getting the protein in early out is difficult at best - and we all understand the not wanting to drink the protein shakes.  However, it is vitally important that you keep trying.  Profect and New Whey are protein bullets - to me, they taste awful.  Good news, is, however, they are 3 ounces and either 25 or 50gm of protein.  So three swigs and you are done.  Some other higher protein ideas from food:

Greek yogurt 17gm for 6 ounces.  Plain it tastes like sour cream....add some splenda and sf jam or add some sf jello crystals to it....or sf davinci syrup....and its yummy

LF or NF Ricotta cheese 1/4 cup has about 7-10gm of protein depending on the brand.  Sweeten w/ splenda and cinnamon for a dessert like taste or heat up in the microwave w/ some garlic powder and spaghetti sauce for a noodless lasagna taste

Polly O string cheese has about 8gm of protein per stick

As far as the numbness goes....nerve damage can result from low b vitamin levels.  I don't know what your doctor has you on as far as supplements go.  However...I have been on 100mg of b1 daily and 1000mcg of b12 sublingual (melts under your tongue) since about 2 weeks post op per my surgeons instructions.  The b12 must be taken sublingual or through injection because we do not absorb the regular tablet form.  I'm not sure how long it takes for nerve damage to happen w/ low b vitamins...and also don't know how low it has to be.  But, the numbness/tingling is generally a nerve sign.

Hang in there - call your surgeon and let them know what is going on - and if need be take the protein shakes.  Don't think of them as something you have to like...think of them as medicine for your body to heal properly.

Protein is so important. I hated the shakes too. The only thing I could stomach was SF Carnation instant breakfast mixed with Skim milk and unflavored Protein powder. Get your protein anyway you can. ALso the fluids are important do what you can. I know at one point I got dehydrated and had that numb tingly feeling,
Keep up the good work, just keep at it
