Boe vs. Brader

Hello,
I have a few questions.

I started the WLS process at Barix in November.  I completed all the steps, recieved insurance approval and got my date.  As I was making my summer and fall plans I was hoping my surgery would be scheduled for the last week in Aug.  I have GS trainings, GS camping trips, work trainings, etc scheduled for Sept, Oct and Nov.  My hubby has set aside time to be with me and I have taken the days of at work for the surgery.

At the Pilgrimage I met Dr. Brader.  I was hoping I could switch to Lancaster and have surgery with him.  I faxed all my doc's to him, and he agreed to allow me to skip the intro meeting because I already did that stuff with Dr. Boe.  Just before I got my date with Barix, Karen (from Braders office) told me she really did not think she could get me in until late Sept.  I scheduled a meeting with Brader for the 11th just in case Barix did not come through with my late Aug date.  On Friday I called Karen to cancel my Monday meeting.  She called me back and told me that Brader had looked over my paperwork and said that I was good to go.  They would be able to give me a date when I am there on Monday.  She said most likley the first week in September but maybe the last in Aug.

My PATS are scheduled at Barix for Wed.  I am planning to attend the Pre-op meeting Tuesday night, stay over in a hotel and then have my PATS done.

My question is........Who do I go with!!!!!!!!!??????   The Aug 27th date really does work best.  The kids start school on the 2nd and I would like to be home and settled.  But what if Brader can do it that week?  Any thoughts or feelings would be great.  I know some of you have seen Brader at Barix but has anyone been to Lancaster General?  Part of the appeal of Barix is that it is WLS only.

Thanks, Jackie

Jackie

Dr. Brader was supposed to do my surgery before he left Barix. He is a great doctor. Very experienced, very talented, very caring and very down to earth. I haven't really had too much interaction with Dr. Boe, other than seeing him around Barix from time to time, but I've heard a lot of the same things about him. I would go with whomever you feel the most comfortable with. I personally feel the Barix program is much better and safer than some of the other hospital programs that I've heard about, but I think that the " Brader factor " brings things up to par or better than Barix. If traveling to Lancaster was feasible, I would have stuck with Dr. Brader, but I have to say that I'm more than satisfied with Barix and love Dr. Pupkova.

Not sure about which Doctor because while a Barix Baby I am a Dr. Pupkova baby. Yet do you have your insurance appraoval for both doctors??? I am not sure if that would matter switching doctors and faclities I would hate to see you miss a date because of paperwork.

Either way good luck and follow your heart with who you feel comfortable with. See ya at the meeting Tuesday night.

I had Dr. Boe do my surgery 2 1/2 weeks ago. He was great. I had a previous surgery in 2001 that I had reversed and he was the only one and Barix that could do my "revision".He is so great and so nice. I felt that I was in wonderful hands with him. I just went back last week for my 2 week visit and he sat down and talked to me for awhile. He did the same at the hospital. He always sat down and talked and that's what I love about him. Plus the nurses at Barix are great. They did alot of follow up calls on me after I left the hospital. The overall care at Barix is wonderful. I hope that helps. Good luck.

Jackie,

As Rita says it is a personal decision.  I chose to use Pennsylvania hospital because I had such good treatment in previous surgeries.  I didn't know about Barix, but if I had I would have probably had to use Dr. Marymour.

I am a Pennsylvania forum fan and there are many people on here who have had both of the surgeons and there are wonderful reviews for both.

Once the surgery is over the most important part of the journey, in my opinion is the support.  So if you find the support as strong at the Lancaster center to be the same as at the Barix center perhaps this will help you with your decision.

Sorry I can't be of more help.  I have a really different view of surgeons.  I loved mine but he did his job and I know he did a great job.  The rest is up to me.

BTW I have had to see my surgeon more often than most GBS patients so I do understand how important liking your surgeon can be.

Good luck with your decision.  You will be in great care and hands which ever way you go.

Hi Jackie,

I had Dr. Brader when he was at Barix.  I had my one year follow up with Dr. Boe and thought he was great.  If Dr. Brader's office had been open when my 1 year had come, I would have gone to Lancaster to see him.  I do plan to continue with Dr. Brader now that he is up and running and need to make my appointment for sometime this fall.  I think Barix is top notch and I have heard excellent things about the new Lancaster program. I have no doubt that the Lancaster is just as great as Barix.   I think either way, you can't go wrong.  One thing that Dr. Brader has that Barix doesnt, is an exercise specialist that their patients get to see as well as the doctor and the nuts, etc.

It really is up to you and what will work best for you and your family.

BTW...thanks again for the veggies.  The zuchini was VERY yummy!!

Thanks guys for you advise.  I am going to keep going on the Barix path.  I already have everything in line for the surgery date, etc.  I have hooked up with another lady who is having surgery the same day.  I have the hotel room reserved for tomorrow night and I do not want to drive to Lancaster today.  I am sure both places are great and I know both Dr.'s are great.  I don't think I can go wrong either way.
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts with me, Jackie
