OT Day Lillies - any ideas?

OK...does anybody else have these in their yards?? I'm new to the whole flower thing.  My aunt is very good at it and I told her I needed plants that A)  Did well in sunlight B)  Were fairly low maintenance.  She told me to get day lillies.  As luck would have it, my mother was pulling hers up as she is planting a veggie garden where they were and gave them to me. We put down good soil, planted the flowers, put a whole bunch of mulch around them (aunt said to do that to help with weed control) and watered the heck out of them for the first few weeks. All of them have buds on them, and some are blooming.  But here's my question: On a few of the plants, the flowers open let's say for about 2 days.  Then, on the third or so day, when they close at night, they seem to get "wilted" and dry and don't open up again.  There are still LOTS of buds on all the plants, and some of them have been blooming every day without fail. The ones that don't reopen after a few days just get drier and drier.  I do water them, plus we've had rain, so I don't think that's the issue. Is something wrong, or is this common? Pam

Pam, I have day lillies and they are such a pretty flower.  It was nice that your mom gave you them. The flower will only last a few days and then they do dry up.....your not doing anythig wrong.  You should pinch off the dried up flower so a new bloom can come on. If you are looking for another plant thats really easy give tiger lilles a try.  I love them...and they come in alot of different colors too. Since I've lost some weight I've been trying out my green thumb alot more...and I'm lovin' it...LOL!! Enjoy your flowers!! Chrissy

Pam, I have lily's in my gardern also. I know the multiply!!! They start out as a nice fuller or ground covering and then the finally bloom pretty bright yellow flowers. Once they bloom they do not last very long, you should pull off the dry and died ones just by pinching the tops off. Have you tried petunia's or begonia's they also do very well in the sun Have fun. i have two plant suggestions: 1. Geraniums. Lot of differnt colors, and they are very easy to take care of. I've never killed one yet. I've watered them, no****ered them, sun, shade...it's all been good. 2. Butterfly Bushes. They bring butterflies to them. I haven't been a huge fan until this year.  We bought two last year, and never planted them. they sat in the pots all winter. One was even laying on it's side.  We never watered it.  I threw one out in March, but just never threw the second one out....well, it's blooming. I have no idea how we didn't kill this plant, but it is alive and well.  It's pretty, brings butterflies, and it appears you can't kill the sucker!

Now that's a bush I could relate to!!  My green thumb is well, not that green.  Most of that is because at my heavy weight I HATED (and I do mean HATED) being outside, ESPECIALLY in the summer.  Now, I don't mind it and have been working dilligently to get our house to look like two adults live there as opposed to hoodlums or whatever (I exaggerate a bit, but you get the point) and part of that is landscaping.  I still have the side of the house to do - so your butterfly bushes might go there.Pam
