protein
Let me first start by saying that yes, protein is VERY important. However, the first couple of weeks, you are almost expected to NOT be able to get it all in. Many struggle during this time.
I like the EAS shakes - but there are a few varieties. You have to find the ones that are within the sugar/fat guidlines. Same thing with the muscle milk pre made shakes. I personally haven't used them, but I do use the muscle milk lite powder and love it.
Unjury makes a chicken broth that is absolutely fantastic.
The protein bullets (new whey, profect) are gross - but as Norm will tell you - it's not about finding something you like - rather - something you can tolerate because you MUST get in your protein. The good thing about them is that they are about 3 ounces - so 3 swigs and your done. You know the saying "close your eyes hold your nose, past the teeth and down it goes" I viewed it as medicine that was needed for me to take.
I also liked the following directly after surgery:
1scoop Nectar Cappuchino flavor protein powder (25gm)
1package no sugar added carnation instant breakfast chocolate (5gm)
1cup skim plus milk (11gm)
A few ice cubes
Blend in a blender for a chocolate mocha kind of thing
You'll have to experiment and see what works for you. Some people mix their protein bullets in with crystal lite and like it that way.
There are debates on that how much protein a body can process at one time thing. My nutritionists say that there is no real hard evidence that says that, it's only a guessing game. many of the recipies I got from them have 40+ gm of protein per serving - and they are ok with that.
Pam
Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.
I hate milk - all aspects, soy, skim, lactose free, etc., and had the same fears you do. I now use protein bullets (blue raspberry, orange, grape) and I put one in a bottle of water - which dilutes them so they kind of taste like frui****er. They're 42 grams of protein and the only protein supplement I don't gag on. They're also very easy. No fuss, no mess.
Hope this helps.
