Sagewalker!!  I was in the exact same position that you are.  My starting BMI was only 37.5%, is I thought that it was hopeless since everyone says how strict that the providers are.  I started weighing 237 lbs in April/08, but my highest was 250 this past xmas.  Anyways, the surgeons office requested the last 5 years of weight records from my DR and I kicked butt on the pre-op diet knowing that if I didn't comply 100% that Id probably be denied.  Actually the dietician told me straight out that insurance has denied people for non-compliance before, lol.   Anyways, I've lost 18 lbs on the preop diet and finished my requirements (nutrition classes, etc) last monday and friday I heard that i was approved and have a date!!  I guarantee you that I NEVER ONCE thought that i would really be approved... and it happened so keep your head up about it, ok?!?!

GOOD LUCK !!

I have Blue shield Blue cross of ORegon PEBB

I do have an appointment with my DR on Monday.  I don 't have my co-morbidities documented mainly because of embarrasement-

Our insurance is 40 with co-morbidity--

I am looking forward to getting to know others here in Oregon.  I am from Hermiston and mom of 7 kiddos ages 16-4 our youngest is special needs.  I really really want to make this happen!
Thank you for the quick response!

Not sure if you have any major co-morbidities to go along with your BMI.  Here are the Medicare guidelines that most major insurers follow:

BMI of 40 WITHOUT any co-morbidities
BMI of 35 WITH at least one serious co-morbidity (such as hypertension [high blood pressure], heart disease, diabetes [Type 2], and sleep apnea)

Your insurer may have different definitions of co-morbidities.  Check with your insurer.

Altho I lost 18# prior to my surgery, my initial weight at my appt with the NP was the only determinant for insurance and surgery purposes.

Don't start losing your 5% until you see the nurse at the U.  Also if you have co-morbids you need a 35 BMI or if you have other issues.  I would call the U and ask about the 40 and the 5%.
