Hi,
I had my WLS performed by Dr. Flanagan in Aug 1999. I nearly died during/following my surgery due to a massive pulmonary embolism and pneumothorax. Right now,I feel like a miserable failure, even though I've lost 200+ pounds. I'm still at almost 300 lbs. I've had two children that I never thought I'd be able to have, and they are my life. Now I am worrid I won't ever be able to be the kind of active mom they deserve. I'd love to make contact with someone regarding a support group, etc.

Topic: RE: Anyone Else Having Problems with Absorption?!?
Hello,
I had my RNY in August 1999. Honestly, I have not been diligent with my long term aftercare. I currently weigh almost 300lbs. My weight the day of surgery was 476. My highest weight was 576. A couple of years ago, I asked my Dr. to draw everything they could think of because it had been awhile since my labs had been done. The results showed I was severely anemic. I was given 4 units of blood. I was then scoped like crazy in a quest to locate a bleed, to no avail. A couple of days ago, I got reestablished with a new Dr, back in the same city where I had my WLS. My new Dr had my blood drawn and I came back anemic again, but also discovered that my Vitamin D level was undetectable. They've put me on oral Vit D supplements and are trying to find an iron suppement that won't make me sick, but won't I just be in the same boat? In my heart of hearts, I'm wanting a revision. I just feel so lost right now.

Welcome home!
Now get plenty of rest and drink enough fluids, even if you have to sip, sip, sip!

A number of our members have recommended Dr. Kelly Fitzpatrick ("Dr. Kelly") for lap-band fills/refills/unfills.  She practices in Portland and Eugene.  Could save you a trip to Hood River.

She is a naturopathic physician (ND) who also specializes in fills with or without fluoroscopy.  She also specializes in Swedish and French lap-bands as well as American lap-bands.  She works with patients who have been banded in Mexico, South America, France, Spain, and other countries.

Here is the link to her website:

Hope this helps!

I had my surgery on the 6th and got  home yesterday afternoon.

The hospital experience was okay.  I was given a really nice private room, with an incredible view.   The staff were very attentive and caring.  I felt like I was being really well taken care of by people who liked their job.

The procedure went really well and I'm tender but not really in a lot of pain, just moving 'carefully'.

Now I'm just working on getting enough fluids in...easier said than done.

I am doing OK.  I have MS and so I expected a few extra problems  just because of that, and I was right.

To give OHSU/Dr Deveney full credit, He really listened to me when I told him about my past op's and any problems I had with them, and then to he paid close attention to what i was telling him about how my MS can flare, and he was prepared for what happened.  He had me put straight into ICU after surgery and that was good when I started having problems.  I didn't want to breath o so they say, and had to be re-intubated and left on the breathing machine for ??? almost a whole day.  I don't really remember anything until Saturday Night and my op was on Friday.

I'm happy that you aren't going to et yourself too upset and have the patience to last through their process.  I think that actually nmight be their plan.  It certainly would how  .... gotta go,I'm  falling asleep while I'm trying to write and that's not good.  Talk to you tomorrow.
