Topic: OH of Eugene/Springfield Meeting for February 2009
We'll go back to meeting on Wednesday in February -- Wednesday, February 18th, from 6:00-7:30 in the community room at the Market of Choice, 29th and Willamette Streets in Eugene. The room is upstairs from the coffee bar. We're not supposed to bring in outside food and drink, but there is a large selection of things in the store if you care to bring something up with you.
I think in March we will try another Thursday meeting, and maybe alternate back and forth. Some folks have commitments on either day. Wednesdays seem to suit most folks best, but Thursday works for others.
All are welcome. Feel free to bring a friend!

Kirby - check with your local newspaper -- each town usually runs announcements at least one weekend in the paper. If there is a local group, they may post a notice there. You're always welcome at the Eugene/Springfield meeting, but I know that's one heck of a long drive.

Topic: RE: I GOT MY DATE-APRIL 28TH
Congratulations Sandra Jean! Dr. O'Rourke was my surgeon as well. I really like him. He is very caring and visited me often, as I ran a fever for a few days after surgery. He was so concerned. I must tell you that you should be sure to have someone with you in OHSU hospital. They are understaffed and care can be slip-shod if you don't have someone to stand up for you. It is a great place, but you can be neglected by the nursing staff if you are alone.

Rose - If you can find it, a good book is Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies or Weight Loss Surgery: A Lighter Look at a Heavy Subject. They both tell about all the surgeries and give you good advice. I think the last one does a better job, but most folks really like the Dummies book.

Read up for yourself Broadway Rose. I had lapband at OHSU and have not heard about any discontinuation of this surgery. They are in the middle of a large research project and I imagine it would be difficult to stop midstream. I agree with Vicki however that the front staff are pretty clueless. I am also happy with my surgery choice and most people are-We all after all have an investment in whatever we chose.
when I talked to Dr. Wolfe about my surgery he said that they have no way of knowing which surgery choice works better for any given patient. They usually go with a patient's choice ( A choice you will have to make in as informed manner as possible). The only issues the doctors have is whether a patient has conditions that pose a greater risk for a given surgery. Dr. Wolfe, for example, said that lapband was a good choice for me given that I had had several abdominal surgery for other reasons and scar tissue could be problematic for RNY or DS. People with huge acid reflux or esophog. motility problems (the food doesn't move down well) are not very good candidates for lapband.
Read as much as you can from blogs, research studies published on the web and information pages on this website. There really is a lot to read and think about.
Good luck in your research!

Topic: RE: Two Days from First fill
I am an OHSU patient-I was banded in August and have had....hmmm 4 fills and one small unfill. I think that restriction is a moving target. Some of my fills have given me restriction. Most of that restriction lasted for 10 pounds ...lost that is. Then it would go away. I think tis is either because i learn to eat properly or the fat that sits around my stomach melts a little and the band loosens up again. I had a big fill in December and needed a small unfill. I have ridden this fill for 16 pounds and now think it is time for a small adjustment. I get full and still have trouble when i fail to chew but get hungry very quickly after meals (like 30 minutes). My weight loss has stopped and I go up and down the same 3 or 4 pounds. In all I am down 40 pounds and about 3 sizes.
Are there experienced band people who have had to periodically get fills throughout weightloss?
