Hi Priscilla,
I was alittle confused on your weight? Are you saying you weigh about 500lbs? When I had my surgery (about 2 1/2 years ago) there were several people about this weight and some were excepted for surgery right away, some not. The ones that were not were just asked to lose some weight on there own first as the Dr.s thought the risk may to high for the surgery at that time. There is a risk of death with this surgery (don't mean to scare you) and there just looking out for your best interest. It's hard to believe a Dr. would say your "to" healthy at 500lbs! Even if all your organs are functioning perfectly, that weight is not healthy! I'd definantly be searching for another Dr.! As far as insurance. Part of some of the insurers go, you need to be 100 pounds over for them to consider picking up the cost. If you need to lose less then 100 lbs. then for the most part your on your own for paying for it. Unless you have some extreme health problems. I don't know if this was very helpful or not, but hang in there, keep looking.... I had my surgery in IL., near Chicago. I can give you that info. if you like.....Stay positive!!!
Priscilla,
Are you going by what one doctor has told you or has every doctor told you the same thing? If it's only one doctor, I recommend looking for one in your area/state that will accept you for surgery before packing up and moving.
However, if you don't have any luck, my surgeon doesn't have any limitations as long as you fit the criteria. At least 100 pounds overweight or a BMI of at least 40. Or, a BMI of at least 35 with a comorbidity (e.g. diabetes, sleep apnea, joint pain, PCOS, etc.).
His website is www.whyweight.com
Good luck,
