I have a question for someone who may be familiar with State Insurance. I am a State Employee and I will be having surgery soon (hopefully real soon) and I am wondering if my short term disability will cover my time off ? I assumed it would and then someone in payroll told me today that they do not believe that the State short term disability covers "elective" procedures..... If you are familiar with State short term disability please email me. Thanks ! Jen Marchand

Jen, ignore payroll - they are wrong. I went to Mexico and paid out of pocket almost 2 years ago and used my short term disability with no problems. The person you were speaking to obviously has a personal bias and considers this cosmetic. This is health related and every bit as important as many other health related surgeries that extend life and provide a better quality of life. Good luck and I'm so happy for you that you are going to be able to use this new benefit! I only wish I had that chance, but paying out of pocket was still worth not having to wait 2 more years to have it done. Dina

Dina's right. While I'm not a state employee, short term disability is available for a wide range of health reasons. Bariatric surgey is one of them. Perhaps your payroll person should have verified this information for you
