Hi. I am thinking about getting a Medic Alert bracelet. Do any of you wear one? If so, what did you have put on it? Why style of bracelet would you recommend? I would appreciate any information you care to share. Thanks. Peg

Hi Peg, I have a Medic Alert bracelet. I had lap band,so my bracelet has that I have a prosthetic device in my adominal cavity. I had 1 made through Laura's Hope with a changeable bracelet. I have been making new bracelets to match my clothes. The ID part stays under so all you see on top is the pretty stones, beads whatever you want. Hope this helps!! Nettie

I have one and have made different beaded band to change with different outfits. I have my name on front and on back it says... Gastric Bypass Do Not Insert NG Tube Blindly Use Endoscopy.

I don't wear one. I don't remember the exact wording that was used by some others that have written on this topic, but what I took from it was that in the emergency instances that most likely will ever happen that would render one unconcious, the insertion of the NG tube would not very likely come into play. Also that the scenario of anyone trying to insert a tube and pushing it through making a hole in your new pouch is something that wouldn't and shouldn't happen with anyone with any training that would be in a position to insert a tube into you. They are trained not to do that on an insertion of anyone bypass or not. I also have read from several EMTs and ER nurses that if it's pretty and looks like a bracelet it may not be recognized as a Medic Alert. When it is an emergency situation they are pretty much looking for the standard ones. Everyone has to weigh the what ifs for themselves, but I decided not to wear one unless I get some other condition and then I would add on the bypass info. Patty

Peg, I talked with a paramedic on the January board. He said they do look at all kinds of jewelry, that is what they are trained to do. He said the bracelet should say: No NSAIDS No Blind NG Tube I looked up NSAIDS and they are "Non Steroidal Anti Inflamatory Drugs) such as Ibuprofin and Aleve. I am checking into that as I do not remember them advising me not to take these. Once I find out I plan on having a bracelet made. Better safe than sorry is how I feel. Kristie
