Post Op Pain
Hello, I had surgery two weeks ago. I had been healing quite well and off the pain meds perscribed to me last week. All of a sudden on Monday I started experiencing extreme sharp pains in my chest up to my shoulder and now it seems to be extending through my back. I was in the ER Tuesday night and was released with the diagnosis being unexplained chest pains. Everytime I take a deep breath, hiccup, cough, sneeze, yawn, etc. it feels like a shock is going up and down my back and chest. As I said earlier - the dr does not seem to know what is causing this but is convinced that it does not have to do with the surgery. Im wondering if it is an anesthesia complication. Anyone else out there with a similar situation??????
Well, you might check with a physical therapist. If your doc can't find a reason for it, it might be myofacial pain or some sort of ligament problem. I found out after seeing my physical therapist that there are things that happen to to muscle covering that pull and twist on other parts of our bodies.
Another thing is that sometimes the fact that we are losing weight will cause our bodies to compensate in weird ways. I know most people are a bit further out before they start experiencing it, but I have found that many people who have lost weight after wls find they have back and shoulder pain, etc. I had a theory it was from shifting weight and compensating in a different manner. My physical therapist seems to think I may be right on that.
Can't hurt to check in with a PT and see what they have to say. They may be able to help with that!

They checked your heart out, right? Heart problems in women are often different than in men and sometimes doctors don't think about gender differences. I have struggled with this myself since surgery.
Work with your PCP because this is not something to ignore. There is a reason for pain always and you need to know what it is.
I hope you are feeling better soon.

I am 12 days post op and have had some pain in my upper back, around the should blades. I talked with others who say this may be from the air that was placed in the surgery site to help to move things around. They tell me this will subside over time, but it does feel like air. Other than that, I don't know, I am a newbie. Carolyn
