Problem Foods? What are yours?

I recall reading somewhere on OH where someone had a problem with an orange as the membrane got stuck in their stoma, so they avoid them like the plague. I haven't had but a small segment that was removed from the membrane because of that! But then I read on Chris's fitday journal that he eats an orange every day. It got me to thinking about how some people have problems with certain foods and some do not. I thought it might be interesting to compare the differences if you all are game! Here are my problem foods as of late: Atkins low-carb cereal (fiber, I think) Low-carb Orowheat bread (fiber again) Eggo Waffle My theme is fiber and carbohydrates. I haven't had problem with regular bread though (I have 1 slice a day with a sandwich). So far I haven't had any problems with meats, but I avoid anything tough and I chew really really well. But that doesn't seem to help with the fiber. I hucked only once (on Atkins cereal) but I could see I was a good chewer! So what are your problem foods??? Dina

Good Morning Dina, Although I haven't tried any low -carb foods, the drinks are a problem for me. I think some of the problem is from post -op when that is all we had to eat. When I eat oranges, I cut them into circles and (like in restaurants) and eat them that way. It cuts down on the skin stuff and I can eat them a little at a time and put the rest on a plate in the fridge. The foods I can not eat are cornbread, and yogurt. I ate a 1 inch square of cornbread this weekend and OUCH!! It was hurting!! It seems for me that crackers and soft cheese go down best for me. Popcorn has helped me with the cravings. Since I don't have problems with sugar, I can have some candy, but do try to eat sf stuff. Other problems I have is meat that is not real thin, like lunch meat. Have a great day!! Sarah

Good idea on the oranges. I can always peel the outside membrane and do the pinwheels. I might have to buy some when we go shopping later! As for the yogurt - do you just get nauseous or ??? You don't get a stuck feeling do you? I haven't tried cornbread yet, nor biscuits, but I've had bread. I'm careful about those though - I think they could be a problem. Dina

Hi Dina, On the yogurt, I dump quickly! I dont know if it is the live culture or what? I dont have that problem with cottage cheese or any other type of cheese. Hmm. I have to also be careful with pasta. Not that I eat much of it, but the angel hair can get stuck if I dont chew very well. I prefer mac n cheese or penne pasta. I dont seem to have any problems. Also I have to watch celery. Sometimes if I dont make a clean rip with my teeth, the stringy stuff has difficulty going down! It is really good with peanut butter! Sarah

Sarah - are you eating SF yogurt? They make a low-carb kind also. I haven't had a problem with the SF stuff - haven't tried the other. Dina

Sarah - I have eaten apple. I had it peeled and I don't know exactly how much I had because I sliced it up and had it with sliced cucumber and shared it with DH who ate most of it. It sounds good right now though so I may have another one today. I'll let you know if I do and how much I can eat. Dina

I am going to jinx myself by saying that I haven't had any problems with anything yet. I am still pretty scared of provoking a problem, and am wondering if troubles are usually immediate (that would make it easy to identify) or something one is trying to connect to a bad feeling later? I have had toast, pasta, very small taco shell, german sausage, grilled beef, and when I took my girls to the movies about 20 kernnels of popcorn. I was feeling very risky with that one, being out in public and all. My doctor has pretty much given me a green light to try anything...I don't know about that. I really am craving salad with raw onions and tomatoes. Think it is too soon? I also would like rice, but have heard so many people say that is a problem for them. Good idea to compare notes Dina.

Well, I've ventured out to the popcorn, but not movie theater style. I counted up the calories and carbs and decided to "spend" it on this a couple of times. As for the salad, I can't quite remember when you had surgery, but I had salad pretty soon out....I think before a month. It chews up really well and I didn't have a problem with it. Not sure about tomato very early though because I've heard the acid can cause cramping with the new pouch. As for rice, I have had a little bit here and there with Chinese stir fry and it hasn't been a problem. When I eat it I do make sure I alternate what I put in my tummy. I don't eat all the rice then move to something else. I eat a bite of rice, then a bite of chicken, then a bite of broccoli, etc. I eat everything that way. I figure there is less of a chance of things getting gummed up and stuck that way. So far I haven't had a problem. Dina

a few days late in replying.. I don't check the local board much. I am a year post-op and the ONLY thing I have a problem with is SUGARFREE stuff (carb solution ice cream, ect) and milk... I think the sugarfree stuff has too much malitol or ??? I seriously dump on it. and the milk I guess I have become lactose intollerant or something. fruits, and carbs do not bother me or upset me in anyway except that I stall my weightloss.. (acutally have stalled it for about 4 months) I am rocking back and fourth between 150 and 155 for 4 months. My personal goal is 135 at 5'5.. but I am unable to excersize on a regular basis due to another disease and I am an emotional eater and life has sent me some serious stress over the past 4 months..
