Well, I just found out that BCBS of MN say's the LAP-BAND is not a covered surgery but the open & Laporscopic gastirc bypass using RYN or VBG are covered....anyone else run across this issue? I feel the LAP-BAND is way more safer, less complications and less recovery time. Any advice to ease my mind.....is much appreciated! THX! Nadine

Nadine - I cannot comment on this since I have no experience with BCBS MN. Sorry.

Hi Nadine.. I don't have BCBS of MN.. but I do have BCBS of Illinois. My surgeon and Primary care physician and I fought with them for over 6 months to get the lapriscopic RNY approved. My surgeon told me up front that BCBS RARELY approves the lap-band they consider it experimental. I know.. I know.. they're idiots. The lap band would have been my first choice for the same reasons you mentioned, but I wanted the surgery and at that point didn't care what they approved... so long as they approved it! All the waiting is almost over.. my surgery date is Monday April 12,2004. I hope it all works out for you Nadine! Penny

Hi Penny, Thanks for the input......I will go ahead and fight and fight and fight until they absolutely say"NO" then I will do what your doing and have it whatever way they will approve me. My insurance doesn't exclude it, they just call it "Investigative", meaning I will have to majorly prove them I need it. I am hoping my doctor Dr. Patterson's office will have the proper papers to send it with my pre-authorization. Anyhow, best of luck to you....Your day is almost here. Keep us updated on your progress! Nadine
