First foods...

Well, I hope everyone had a great holiday season. My mom left today () and I know I'm a grown woman but it still makes me sad! She spent two weeks here (she lives in California, where I grew up) and literally did everything for me/us! I am so lucky, and I hope she knows how grateful I am. Anyway, tomorrow is my last day off and then I'm back to work. Monday is also my last day on the liquid diet! Hallelujah!!! I am ready to start eating something, even if it's cottage cheese (which really sounds good, haha!) I was just wondering, what did all of you post-ops start with for soft foods? I have some ideas: refried beans, scrambled eggs, tuna, etc. but I was just wondering if there were some other ideas. I go Monday for my first post-op appointment (after work) and I'm sure I'll get the info there too, but I'd like to hear from you, the ones who have been through it!! I've been feeling pretty good, well darn good I'd say. I've been up and around acting normal (that's scary!!) for the most part. I still like to take a nap though, and I know I will be exhausted once I go back to work Monday. Any words of advice? Take care everyone, keep me updated on how you're doing too! I really appreciate the support here. THANKS!! ~Lynn Open RNY 12/16/03

Hi Lynn: I had my surgery in July. I found I really liked hard boiled eggs even better than scrambled ones. I ate a lot of refried beans. I liked non fat yogert and Split Pea Soup. Fresh baked Salmon tasted very good, too. The main thing seemed to be nothing that can swell up like rice or white bread. The other was that what I ate had to be moist. I really don't have a problem with anything except those two things. Everything agrees with me as long as I watch the size of my portions. The hardest thing was going from comfortable to way to full in just one bite. By the way I can do Rice-a-roni just fine so if you love rice you might try that as a substitute. Good luck as you go back to work. Molly

Thank you so much for your advice! I have been 4 days now eating soft and pureed (at first I thought yuck, but found out that it's really okay) foods. So far I have had tuna salad (pureed and modified of course), barbecue chicken breast (pureed), scrambled egg-beaters, and cottage cheese. My doc says no to the refried beans because of the fat content. However, I bought the non-fat refried beans and am thinking about having those sometime too. His 3 week out diet is really limited; it only really wants you to have protein, protein, protein. I've been drinking fruit 2-0 which is pretty good, crystal ligh****ered down juice, and of course water. I am missing my breads and cheeses. Well, not really missing them, just thinking, "Boy, I bet those would taste good...but I'm not really hungry for them." Thanks again for your advice and your wishes for good luck! (We've been snowed/iced in for three days so I've had an extra three days at home...hehe!) ~Lynn

How'd the appointment go Lynn? Are you right on track? I am no one to give advice on food.. I am naughty with it.. I ate pizza on day 14.. yikes..I still eat a peice about once or twice a week..just a small peice if it has lots of toppings on it I cannot even eat a whole one.. soft foods that were good to me were the usual Tuna, cottage cheese, I eat a lot of salad ..I love lettuce even though it is not a soft food I was very good and chewing my stuff up so good it was a soft food before I swallowed it... yogurt always agreed with me in the early days... at 4 months out I eat anything I want ..I am definately not a dumper.. sometimes I can eat more sometimes I can just eat a few bites.. I never know what to expect.. seems like the things that are not so good for me go down way easier than the good stuff...
