Double Covered with Insurance & Denied

I am just starting the uphill battle with my insurance company. I was denied by my primary, because they said that my plan does not cover it. How disgusting! I am 6'0 413lbs with a BMI of 56.1. and my insurance won't help me. I have BCBS HMO Oregon, and my husband has BCBS Pebb. And both have exclusion clauses. I am venting, and if any one else has battled with either of the above please post a message and let me know.

you need to call up the insurance company and ask them if it is a madical reason you are needing the surgary will they cover it. my surgary had to medical necessity. I was approved in less then 24 hours. I hope this will help. Becky

It has been my unfortunate experience to be insured by Regence BXBS.. they have an iron clad exclusion.. not only do they exclude treatment in any way of obesity but they also exclude any care related to a condition caused by the treatment of obesity.. I have spoken to Walter Lindstom and he basically said it is a waste of time... in Oregon we need legislation to force insurers to cover treatment of this disease. BXBS does cover in so many States .. they have to.. I have ran in to a few people on this site with BXBS and they said it never was settled they had to self pay. I sought a supplemental policy and never found anything worthwhile. Good luck in your pursuit.. never give up. When it is your time it will all fall in to place. I have journeyed for four years before finally finding my way. Hope springs eternal! CJ

Sheryl, I went through insurance hell with both Regence BC/BS HMO Oregon and ODS. Both have air-tight exclusions - with clauses written in to elminate any obligation on their part even if the condition is imminently life-threatening, hence, they have no obligation to cover ANYTHING related to weight (i.e., I could have been anorexic and dying just as I was SMO and dying!). Walter Lindstrom was great - he was so honest and forthright with me - and believe me, not all attorneys are! I worked in the legal field for more than 10 years, so I can say with assurance he didn't have to be! He told me to save myself some time and lots of money and self-pay - so I did. I had my surgery with Dr. Aniceto Baltasar in Alcoy, Spain. I had an excellent experience, and my life since then has been nothing less than spectacular! I'm sorry you're having to go through this.
