DS vs RNY

I have been reading so much on DS and RNY from people's profiles. Is it a fair statement to make that DS people never gain back their weight and can eat whatever they want to? If this is true, why do so many people choose RNY? I have no opinion either way, as I am a pre op. I am just very curious. Donna Thanks. -- Donna Castro
I don't think most people choose RNY on their own. I think that most people are told by sureons to choose RNY. It is an easier operation to perform and less chance for complications in recovery. Much less risk for the doctor. I also think that DS is much more invasive surgery and some folks are turned off about having their intestins re-routed, and part of their stomach removed.
Hope this helps. Lisa
I am 5 mo. post-op with a DS. My Dr recomended it and I think it was a good choice for me.
What you gain is more effectiveness and convienience. The downside of an abrieviated digestive system are: 2-3 bowl movements day. Loose stool and occational realy bad gas.
I seem to be able to eat more foods and in much more "normal" amounts. For me it has been a good trade-off but the downsides are real.
Find a surgon you like and trust and have them give you the skinny. (bad pun, not intended)
I think the world of Dr. McConnell up at OHSU. He was great about explaining and sketching out different options. We had fall back plans if in mid surgery, we needed to change courses.
Good luck, Scott
