I’m 5'7 and 320 lbs, my BMI is 50.1, i have no real co morbidities and I’m scared they will say no to the surgery. Do they do the procedure lapriscopicaly? I don’t know, I’m just scared about rejection and want to go where I have the best shot at getting it done and safe. Just looking for any advice, from anyone at this point. Thanks

With a BMI of 50 you shouldn't be rejected anywhere, even without a co-morbidity. I know OHSU tries to do every procedure by lap, and assume that Sam does as well. Go to both of their free classes (parking is free and easy at both) and see which one you like better. Good Luck!

Both places are going to look for a qualified condidate and someone they think will be successful with the surgery. Shy of any serious mental conditions or other health (heart) condition that would prevent you from having the surgery, I do not think either will turn you down, insurance is often the problem. From what I have heard anymore they do most often they do it laparoscopicly again shy of any health conditions you might have that would prevent it being done that way. To get your question answered you really need to go in and talk to the professionals. You are going to hear this a lot "everyone is different." Having the RNY is the best decision I ever made. I was not an unhappy person before just unhealthy. Now I am very healthy and happy. Good luck!
You insurance may want a co-morbid condition....check with them. My blood pressure was slightly elevated but I was also having joint problems which counted as a co-morbid condition. Do some research, check with your insurance company and attend one or both of the seminars. Which you have to do to get into the programs anyway, so sign up and get more information from the professionals.
The docs in both places are great, but as far as hospitals? DO NOT go into OHSU unless you have someone there with you to watch out for you. I got abysmal care there, not only after my gastric bypass, but particularly after some back surgery I had. They are short-staffed and some of the nurses couldn't give a rip about their patients.
